There are a few reasons your hermits not be that active. Temperature is one (should be in the mid-70s). Another is moisture/humidity. Even though the hermits are terrestrial, they are born in the ocean and use gills to breathe. The shell helps keep moisture trapped in the shell, but if your house is dry, they get too warm, you don't mist their tank or don't give them frequent baths, the gill will dry out (and they will die). I've always had them most active right after a bath. Use lukewarm dechlorinated water and dunk them for a minute or two, then let them walk around on a towel/paper towel to get rid of excess water.

Another possibility is that they need to molt. Do you have deep enough substrate for them to dig and cover themselves completely?

Here are two websites where you can find more about the suggestions I've given you:

I had two a few years ago and that's what they do. lol They are very boring pets, so that's why I recently bought a more interactive pet: a guinea pig. (I can't have a cat or dog because I'm allergic.)

Except, it was a little creepy because my bigger hermit crab ate my smaller hermit crab except for his eyes and shell. It was very gross. Then the big hermit crab kept burying himself because he was depressed. lol I kept trying to save him but he eventually committed suicide. True story. =(

hermit crabs are primarily watched pets. they don't play, they eat and crawl around and change shells and pinch.
