There are multiple threats facing the Canadians auto industry. One major one is that the Conservatives did not promise to exempt the industry from Kyoto targets like the Liberals had. The industry is expected to be asked to meet California type emission standards, to which the Union says will be the death blow to the industry....which leads to the next problem. The Union.
The CAW Union has grown to become big business themselves, and has shown that they are not afraid to destroy the industry to make a stand. This might have got auto workers salaries twice as high as nurses or teachers, but they have priced themselves out of the international market.
The final is the mis-adventures of the big 3 US automakers. Until they learn to compete internationaly, they are killing themselves. It is not entirely their fault, as the US and Canada has relaxed import laws while countries like Japan and Korea tax US imports harshly, but then again, German and Japanese cars have taken over for quality and value in the US and internationally, and the big 3 need to catch up to them.

I think the threats facing us in here in Canada are much the same as anywhere else. The price of gas is killing the auto industry. Nobody wants the big V6 engines anymore. The 4 bangers don't last long unless you baby them.
GM is going strong, they make the impala's up here. Ford is in trouble, it's just a big mess really everywhere.

The same threats that face the U.S. auto industry, top level corporate greed is destroying the industrial base of both country's, not just their auto industry's. If you can't understand the fact that the loss of high paying auto industry jobs is bad for the country, you are clearly a neo-con corporate elitist exploiting one of those companies.

I work for U.S.Steel and I can tell you the major problems facing the U.S. and Canadian auto industries.
Foreign auto makers, not the ones made over seas the ones built here in the U.S.
I work in the leading galvanizing plant in the U.S. and in the last five years there has been a major shift. We went from 90% of producing for the big 3 down to about 40%. Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi have surpassed them in orders. (all U.S. plants)
The transplant companies far exceed the quality demands of the U.S. automakers.
The best bet you have for the future of your Canadian auto industry is to lure the transplant companies to Canada.

Sorry, I'm in the American auto industry, but I have no clue what is up with your industry.
