We call it a Soothie. Because we first used the actual Soothie brand pacifier that they gave us at the hospital and then the name just stuck for all pacifiers.

I'm quite sure that Binky was also a name brand at one time. I think over time folks have just kept using that name because it sounded more 'baby-ish' than the word pacifier. Some folks find it necessary to talk to their children in a baby-ish manner, instead of calling out to your one year old "Do you want your pacifier?, they instead call out "Do you want your binky? - it just sounds like something that a baby would want more.. I'm one of those folks too though, however we just used the shorter version of pacifier and went with paci. Nothing else, just paci.

Not sure if they are still in production today, but "Binky" used to be a brand name of a popular pacifier. I used to call mine "momo" because, hey, gimme a break, i was only like 1 1/2!

Not sure how they got the name binky, but we call it the paci. Yeah, not so original.

I have also heard them called:
baby plug
cork
sucker
suckie
chew toy
nippy
ninny
button
bobo
dummy (in the UK and Australia)
oshaburi (in japan, meaning 'sucker')

We call them a "PACI", just because I hate the name "binky".
I also heard a friend call it a "nothin" because they get nothing out of them!!

It got it's nickname because of the noise it makes while babies suck on it. The squeaky noise, "binky, binky" lol. I always called them plugs.
