Location ideal for controlling trade, esp. in wheat, from Black Sea to Mediterranean. Trading post originally called Byzantium, then Nova Roma, then Constantinople, finally of course Istanbul (see great song about name changes). Trojan war was waged because of access to grain, ruins of Iliad-era Troy being to the south of the present-day Istanbul. City is built on both Europe and Asia.

Constantine refounded an existing city. The site has been strategically and commercially important from the earliest times, lying as it does astride both the land route from Europe to Asia and the seaway from the Black or Euxine Sea to the Mediterranean, and being possessed of an excellent and spacious harbour in the Golden Horn.

B Constantine felt that it was more central to the Empire. Also it kept the capital away from the marauding barbarians.
