UCLA is a great school!
It has a rather competitive admissions rate. It has some really top programs. And, it's ranked pretty well too, especially for a public school.
You can see here: http://admitspit.wordpress.com/2006/09/18/admission-statistics-for-top-colleges-2006/ that their admit rates are pretty close to even some Ivy League schools (like Cornell, for ex.)
I know they especially have great programs for the performing arts (well, it's LA, duh, right) and for business and economics, and pre-med.
