A dream is recalled most easily if we awaken during it or immediately after it ends. If more than a few minutes lapse at the end of a dream, we risk forgetting of the dream.
Also your dreams might occur in non-REM sleep. The people who dream in REM sleep remember more.

it means that you do not go to bed with the mindset of remembering even the slightest part of a dream. consciously make an effort at bedtime by telling yourself you are going to remember what you dream (everyone has 5 to 7 dreams every night). Put a pencil and paper next to your bed and immediately write anything you can remember upon waking up. Even the smallest details are significant. If you do this long enough, your subconscious mind will know that your conscious mind want to recall all dreams. It takes a while once you are in the mindset. Remember, dreams are your brains's way of reconciling your conscious world with your subconscious world and are not literal translations but symbols.

It's not remembering something when you're conscious 5 minutes ago. Same thing.
