A superpower is a state with the first rank in the international system and the ability to influence events and project power on a worldwide scale; it is considered a higher level of power than a Great power. It was a term first applied in 1943 to the Soviet Union, the United States, and the British Empire. Following World War II, the British Empire was gradually decentralized and dismantled and the Soviet Union and the United States were regarded as the only two superpowers, then engaged in the Cold War.
Currently, the most common belief among mainstream journalism and in the world of academia holds that only the United States of America fulfills the criteria to be considered a superpower. Sometimes, given the unipolar nature of the world, it is described as a hyperpower.
China and India appear to have the greatest potential amongst all the other nations of achieving superpower or near-superpower status within the 21st century and are often termed as emerging superpowers. The European Union has economic power about the same as the United States but lacks a comparable unified military. As a result, some consider that despite not being politically unified, it may be either an emerging or existing superpower, depending on one's viewpoint.
Others, however, doubt the existence of superpowers altogether, stating that today's complex global marketplace and the rising interdependency between the world's nations has made the concept of a superpower an idea of the past and that the world is now multipolar

China has a population of about 1.3 billion (about one fifth of the worlds people) and a massive army. It has become a lot richer in the last ten years. It has about 1 billion more people than is in the USA now. So the answer is a definite yes. Russia is no longer the power it was. It was more powerful as the soviet union.

China is not a world power. She has a navy that is only capable of coastal operations - she could project a bit of power around the South Spratly Islands etc, but she could not challenge Japan at sea at the moment.
The Chinese nuclear option is weak and would not be of use against even minor Nuclear powers such as the UK or France.
The Chinese are embarking upon a massive upgrade of their forces, but it will be 2030 before they can have caught up with, or surpassed, the West.

Not even close. China may bridge the gap eventually - no time soon - but America will probably always be the #1 Power in the world. The point may come where we it would be to risky to fight China - currently, they are a mountain we cannot move - but I dont see a war between us in the near future. If ever.

"When China awakes, it will shake the world." - Napoleon Bonaparte
"Once China becomes strong enough to stand alone, it might discard us. A little later it might even turn against us, if its perception of its interests requires it." - Henry Kissinger
Read magazines like Economist, Businessweek or Fortune. Pretty much every issue has a article about this subject.
China's consumption of natural resources will keep on rising until there is not enough. The prices of materials will go up due to demand. And guess what is next? :) Middle Eastern Coalition vs China vs Western Coalition

Absolutely, if you're including Russia.
So superpowers were based on three main areas: economy, world influence, and military.
China's economy is growing be leaps and bounds; they are exerting influence beyond just Asia and are a member of the Security Council; and they have the largest standing army and nuclear capability.
Easily, they are a superpower. They are not yet in the same class as the USA though. We have a bit more of everything they have (except for the standing army, but we make up for it in technology).
We're still #1, but they are gaining fast.

Not yet. But it will be big time. Western investment (greed to some of us!) has ensured that. The sleeping dragon has been awakened. What will the Yanks do about it? We'll see (well not me actually!)
