I think the cause of most human suffering in the lack of sympathy. Here is why. Sympathy is not only an emotion, it's the bridge that spans the gap between idealism and morality. If they are not connected by sympathy scary terrible things can happen on a large scale. Take for example the slaughtering of millions of civilian Chinese by the Japanese before and during WWII. The nation wide thought that the Chinese didn't have the right to exist was brought on by terrible idealism. The fact that Chinese girls were kidnapped and sent to Japanese military posts to be raped hundreds of times a day to help boost soldiers spirits was brought on by a lack of morality.
The point is idealism makes ugly things acceptable then peoples morals change to meet their idealism. Sympathy towards other living creatures keeps idealism from getting ugly. Sympathy towards living creatures made it hard for Nazi SS to kill innocents (many SS volunteered to go to the front line in Russia to get away from Concentration camps). Sympathy is why the short man you knew in the Desert will never be a supervillon.

Greed is a sociological cause of suffering, before their were social structures there was no greed. So greed can't be the 'most basic cause of human suffering'.
To me the most basic cause would be the initial struggle to survive in this world. The need to find food and shelter. To procreate to that out species does not die. This are the most basic imbulses with in us and derive from the basic nee to survive.

By nature, man is a social animal. So therefore, I think the most basic cause of human suffering would be isolation. When a person feels alone, or different...or not cared for.

Non-acceptance of what is. Hanging on to how we think things ought to be. Judging everything as right or wrong. Everything we accept just the way it is without judgment, we move beyond and learn from. It then is no longer a source of suffering. That is how we grow in consciousness/awareness.
Resistance to anything is suffering. Self-created suffering. Acceptance does not mean agreeing that is OK, acceptance means letting it affect me however it may so I move beyond it. What I resist ,persists!.

I think that a desire for continuity is the source of suffering. one can desire and take pleasure in something in the moment and I think that doesn't lead to suffering. but what does is the desire for the continuation and renewal of that moment, which is just another way of saying that the self is the source of suffering.

Imagination, used wrongly.
Most of the things we imagine never come to pass, but we continue to use our minds in a negative way.
Minds used wisely, on the other hand, can lead to joy and freedom.
On second thought, maybe it is the mind that causes more suffering.

lack of enabling funds to do what you/me decide is " the right thing" and it doesn't matter if the answer that satisfies is "buy food" or even "buy drugs" > its the lack of what people can do that is the cause of their suffering. ( but not being willing to work to get them is NOT an excuse!

Limited resources. Greed would not be a problem if our resources were unlimited.
