horsepower is the measurement of an engine's ability to do work. It may not necessarily mean that a vehicle with a higher horsepower will go faster than a vehicle with a lower horsepower. It depends on the mass of the vehicle the engine has to move.

For example, an 18-wheeler truck will have a much higher horsepower than a Kawasaki motorcycle, but of course no one expects the truck to be faster than the bike.

Another way to look at this is to ask how many horses would it take to pull a truck and how many would it take to pull a car or a motorcycle or a lawnmower, etc....

In answer to your first question, torque is what actually moves the vehicle. Horsepower is a combination of torque and engine speed (rpm) factored through an equation (HP=torque/5252xRPM). An engine with 200HP at 5,000RPM would prove much quicker than a car with 200HP at 10,000RPM because there is undoubtably more torque in the former. An engine with a lot of horsepower and very little torque has a high redline and is fast in the higher rpms. An engine with very little horsepower and a lot of torque has a low redline and is faster is the lower rpms. The ideal engine would have a flat torque curve throughout the entire usable rpm range, meaning that every rpm in any given gear would pull just as hard as the next. In response to your second question, it depends what kind of car your looking for. IMO the best overall car out now is the Infiniti G35 sedan. 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds, optional AWD, seats 5, is comfortable, looks nice, and comes with 306HP and 268lbs of toruqe (which is certainly good).

Horsepower is a good indicator, but the weight of the car is also important. you have to look at the horsepower in relation to how much the car weighs.

Horsepower is actually a calculation not a measurement of power. It's meant to tell you something about how powerful the engine is. What is actually measured is Torque. They then take the torque figure, and what RPM your engine makes peak torque at to find horsepower. The forumula is HP = Tq*rpm /5252

An engine might have alot of torque , or twisting force.. but if it makes it's torque very low in the rpm range, it won't have alot of horsepower. If you want speed, it's better for an engine to make it's torque way up high in the rpm range so that you can take better advantage of gearing.

under 50 grand.. you can't do better than a corvette.

Horsepower is just a measurement of amount of energy a car engine can put out. There are other factors that affect a cars performance such as the mount torque the drive train can put to the wheels. Horsepower utilization is also depended on the weight to power ration of your car. You can have allot of horsepower and still have a car with poor performance.

If you want to know the best car to buy for under 50K it would largely depend on your lifestyle, driving style, and driving habits. Are you a car person, SUV person, or a truck person? Is this just for you or for a family. Do you want a performance sedan or do you want a sporty car? There are many factors that determine the right car for you.

horsepower is a rating of power for mechanical engines. Just because a car has a lot of horsepower does not mean it is fast, it just means the engine puts out more power. This is because of power loss from engine wear, transmission differences, drag from tires, weight, and coefficeint drag. A car could be a diesel and have the right transmission and have the same acceleration of an equal gasoline car of twice the horsepower. For a faster car get a manual transimssion too, they offer more control over the car. For a car i would suggest a foreign made car, domestic made cars are hunks of junk.

wieght horsepower and torque are what drives a car fast or slow...horsepower is the push, torque is the pull...torque is usually at the low rpms while horsepower comes about at the higher rpms...

go to caranddriver.com and u can get the most appropriate answer to what car under 50 grand is the best...but if your lookig for a sports car....(even though i am not a big fan of them) a new corvette right now gives you the most bang for your buck.

Horsepower is just a rating system used to Rank engines power output. That power can be used to make a vehicle go faster (like a sports car), or it can be used to make the vehicle stronger (like a truck).

Woah their partner. Horsepower isn't the end all be able specification to look at.

But yes in general horsepower refers to how much power the engine produces.

If you're looking for a sports car you might also want to consider the suspension, the transmission, the weight, the drivetrain.
