Other posters give answers a thumbs up because they think the answer is a good one.
I use it if I was going to say the same thing. Instead of posting another repeat answer, I just give the person with my same answer a thumbs up.
Personally, I think that only the asker should be able to rate the answers. But I guess having everyone being able to rate the answers, gives the asker an at a glance view to help in picking the best answer, when all of the answers are good ones, but similar.

you get extra pts if you're picked as best answer. so if ya have 3 thumbs up and get best answer, you get 13 pts. up to 50 extra pts.
