I am thinking of either a brother or a canon. The cost of the ink is more of a consideration rather than the cost of the printer. Any advice on the cheapest way to get the ink for it aswell would be good.

When you choose a printer you need to think about what you will be using it for.

If you just want to print out text documents then an inexpensive printer with chreaper ink cartridges will do. However, if you plan on printing graphics and photos you need to spend a wee bit more.

Epson printers are mid range price and their cartridges, like canon, are quite cheap, but the print head is in the actual printer. So eventually (with mid to heavy use) the print quality fades and you more or less need to throw away the printer. The ink cartridges also run out quicker.

HP and Lexmark printers are reasonably priced, but their cartridgres are dearer. Thats because they have a print head on the cartridge so the print quality never deteriorates, plus the cartridges do last longer.

I work from home and I print loads of pages out every day including plain text and full colour. I paid £120 for an canon printer and it lasted me a year. I also had an HP before that which I paid £45 for and it lasted me 5 years and it only stopped going because I tripped and dropped it. I am now back to a HP.

You can get cheap ink by ordering it online from places like MX Food and HP/Lexmark cartridges are refillable and recycleable.

Printers - Canon. Excellent printers and the inks tend to be the cheapest too, which is important in the long run. Avoid HP and Lexmark - their cartridges have integral print heads - thats why their printers are so cheap but inks are so expensive.

Inks - I always used to shop around for spares before the one in the printer ran out, so was never having to buy one in a hurry. Remanufactured (ie. refilled) ones are cheaper. If you reckon you can do it (and it isn't rocket science if you are fairly handy), refill kits are the cheapest option.

We've always had Epson printers as the ink is really really cheap. We recently got a Lexmark though and the ink has been a lot more pricey!
But whatever printer you decide to buy visit your nearest 'Cartridge World' Shop, you can take your old inks to get refilled for cheaper.
Good luck!

Paul F is right about the Which report - and that report is why I bought a Canon - but the IP4200 has been superseded by the IP4300 - I got mine for about £60 from PC World by going on line and selecting "Collect at Store" - the same printer is £80 in store.
It's and excellent printer - I have usually had HP printers before, though I have had a few Brothers, and some other makes.
But this Canon is really good.
I also bought one for my daughter about a month after I got mine - I was so impressed with it.
Good luck !

I am on my second Epson in ten years, the other was still great but wasn't compatible with this new PC. It is a scanner and a photocopier too. It was £60 at a computer fair, they hold them often in most towns.

Either Epson, or Canon.
I 'defined' my current printer like this. First, do a search for 'Continuous Ink Supply System' , then that will give you a list of printers that can be adapted (but mod is not permanent, can be reverted). Pick your printer, pick your system.
Cost of ink....embarrasing CHEAP. Epson carts hold 13ml ink, cost about £6 I buy my ink 600ml a go, thats about 45 carts... for £20.
WORKS OUT AT FORTY PENCE A CARTRIDGE.
Heres a couple of examples...
System I use..
