We are currently redecorating our kitchen and we just got a new tap. As far as I'm concerned it is hooked up properly...it works, water comes out. However the water that it produces tastes awful, like rubber or something. Even when boiled the water from the tap still tastes bad. The bad water is only coming from that new tap, all the others in the house are fine. My question is, is this normal when fitting a new tap? Will the bad taste go away after it has been used a while?

Everyone has good suggestions and answers. FYI pipe dope is a gray or white compound at the joints and connections of the pipe. As far as the funny rubbery taste, that is just because it is new. What you should do is let the tap run for a while, maybe two to three gallons and see if that works. If that doesn't work you need to get an inline water filter that you can pick up for 10 to 30 dollars at the hardware store. When you pick one up make sure it says for odor and taste.

Did you use pipe dope on the connections? That will make you water taste bad. It might go away after awhile, but if that is the cause I would clean and redo the connections using Teflon tape.
There are plastic parts in the faucet I have not known them to impart flavor to the water. Other than that I can't think of anything.

By tap, I have to assume you mean faucet, and there's nothing in any faucet that I've ever installed that would make any difference in the way the water tasted that ran through it. I'd check the feed lines coming to the faucet. Maybe they were changed when the new faucet was installed and the feed lines are the culprits.

I'm sure that's because it's new. It should resolve itself. If not,ca;; a plumber to see what they have to say. If that doesn't resolve your issues, install a water filter for cleaner water, or buy one of those Brita Water Pitchers or bottled water.
