His motivation had probably something to do with pride. His goal was to conquer the whole world (He didn't understand that the world was much bigger than he assumed it was).

alexander wanted to conquer persia and practically rule the known world and beyond. his motivation was to continue his father's (King Phillip) original goal of taking out the Persian Empire.
