I hate to sound like a therapist, but before you can learn a new behaviour, you have to understand why you don't already exhibit that behaviour. Why is it that you have trouble caring about others and their lives? If you don't understand that, you will not truly solve your dilemma. Its good to know that you want to, but it will only be an act if you don't truly understand what has been preventing you from caring for others. Its not a natural state, afterall. Humans, by nature, take an interest in others around them.
Once you understand what prevents you from caring, you can address that...the rest will follow.
Good luck...

I think the very best way is to really imagine yourself in their shoes. What would you think? How would you feel? What would you do? How would you cope? When you talk to someone and they tell you something really listen. Then reflect on what they said, and ask yourself those questions.
Another thing to do would be to pray. God cares about all his children, and I'm sure he is so pleased that you have a good heart and want to change. You are a good example. Compassion in not thought of enough.

The best teacher of compassion is life itself. If you had to undergo through an experience that causes severe suffering (for example, cancer), then you'd appreciate the value of compassion pretty quickly. So wait until something terrible happens to you. Then you will learn very fast.

The best way to "learn" to be compassionate is to always think what you would like someone to do for you in the same situation and then do that. Treat others as you would have them treat you.
That is the message of the bible. That is what we should all do as we are all ONE and connected. Help one help all.

Just start surrounding yourself with people. Go to new places, and learn new stuff. Have a solid mindset that doesn't restrict you to a limited group of people, broaden your horizon, allow yourself to open up more. Strike up a conversation about something you never saw yourself talking about! <3

I think trying to learn how to care for people is something that can't be done in abc manner. just be aware of yourself and the world around you. don't try to be aware to achieve a result just be in the world and pay attention to yourself and your motives and your heart will become transparent to you. you can't really care about something you're alienated from and you can't learn to care 'theoretically', so just be in touch with things and go from there.
