You need modem if you have a Dial up Internet connection.
For DSL/CABLE you need Ethernet Card or a Wireless Card/USB Adapter installed instead.

Probably not!

A modem connects the phone line Only to the computer, so is essential for dial-up Internet connection of course, but a DSL or Cable modem connects to your Ethernet socket or a Wireless Card/USB Adapter.

The reason I say you "probably" won't need a modem though, is that they are still useful if you are sending or receiving Faxes. Even if you do, you may prefer to use one of the web services that will receive faxes for you and forward them to you as an e-mail. These are usually available for free in most countries, but whether they will allow you to send out faxes or not seems to be a bit more uncertain as phone calls (even local ones) can be quite expensive in some countries.

If you don't intend sending faxes, or even receiving them, then there is no reason to have a modem at all. There is one other benefit to not having a modem and that is that there are still rogue programs out there that try to connect you modem to a premium rate number (often in another country so you can do nothing about it). No modem - No problem!

I hope this helps a little?!

No. You should be able to connect to the DSL external modem using either a USB cable or an Ethernet network cable depending on your DSL modem. If you use the USB method, you may need to install a USB driver for the DSL modem.

u can remove or disable ur internal PC modem... btw, ur pc modem is NOT the same as a DSL modem. It is most likely a Dial-Up modem which is not widely used in the US anymore as most people connect via broadband (DSL or Cable)

No. You can use a USB connection. DSL modems connect via the ethernet socket or via a USB connection.

If the checklist is on your pc or could be scanned you're able to acquire efax that is unfastened & you deliver faxes out of your pc & acquire them with the aid of your digital mail. Works large for me, no fax gadget needed.
