They were a numbered series that, if I remember correctly, ran in between shows on PBS. It was drawn in a style similar to the BC comic strip. It was mostly narrated with a guy acting out what the voice over was describing.

Oh... i just remembered it always started with the narrator saying "The story so far..." (or something like that)

wasn't 3 2 1 contact or The Electric Company (both things other people have suggested to me). I have a feeling it was made in the 70s or very early 80s.

Wasn't Schoolhouse Rock either...

Could it be 3,2,1, contact or Electric company. You didn't say how old the people were who would watch it. But those are the two I remember.
