The necktie evolved from the ruff, popular in Shakespeare's time. Early neckties, or cravats, were basically long narrow scarves which wrapped around a man's neck several times and tied in strange, complicated knots. In 1926, Jesse Langsdorf from New York invented the bias-cut (US) or cross-grain (UK) necktie that we know today.
