It seems like most sins have a purpose - to stop people from hurting other people. So why is being gay a sin?

I highly doubt that you can help who you are attracted to. It is not a choice like some people believe (believe me, my brother is gay)! So why is it a sin to be attracted to your own gender?

Do you have any reasons OTHER than the fact that it's written somewhere in a 2000 year old book?

I've yet to hear about a pair of gay abusive foster parents and yet people always claim that gays do not make good parents (many accusers are often people who have never met a gay person in their life...)

If it is a sin, it is no more a sin than eating shellfish, selling your daughter into slavery, cussing your mother and father, wearing two different threads and lying to yourself and others about your sexuality.

If you are a Christian you know Jesus died for all of your sins - not just the ones that Pat and Jerry commit everyday.

I am confused about the gay foster parents. I know plenty of same-sex couples raising children and they are fine.

Good luck

Because somebody misread the bible, or mistranslated it. There are biblical historians who believe that the sins in Sodom were rape, ritualistic sex and inhospitality, rather that homosexuality.
Being an abusive or bad parent has nothing to do with your sexuality. There are good and bad parents in all sexualities. People are bringing issues into the argument that have absolutely nothing to do with sexuality, it's like saying that blondes are more likely to be bad parents.

it states it is an abomination which is not just like eating shellfish,or selling someone into slavery its something if you believe the book that you cant get out of.
Most important is the act it is described in detail in the old translations as laying with a man as one would a woman or more exacting having intercourse with another man-this is what the old and the new scholars believe/believed.

A sin is anything that you do and enjoy that I don't do or enjoy and that makes me uncomfortable knowing that you do it. Does that about sum up the significance of "sin?"

It isn't. There is nothing wrong with it, it is not a choice. Therefore it is not a sin.

i've been through a lot of bad "straight" foster homes. There've been a lot of times I wish they'd put with a gay couple. seems like they'd appreciate a kid more and be mroe likely to treat one better. i dunno if that's true but makes some sense to me.

i dunno why it's a sin. God's about love, makes no sense why some people preach hate in his name.
