Spartan or a Samurai? With and without weapons, in single combat and in army forray. Let's just say that they did live during the same time.

You need more criteria for the question.

Both are warriors and both are students of individual battle.

Size, battle environment, and reason for the battle. Even then it would be difficult to guess. If I had to guess it would be giving the edge to the Spartan. They were raised for this from birth and were taught the concept of win or come home dead.

it can go either way, depending on level of experience. With weapons, the spartan would have a good shield and a good sword to slash with. The samurai wouldn't have a shield, but if he was quick he could easily slash the spartan. Without weapons would be a good question. If only we had a real Spartan and Samurai!

As a Spartan refers to anyone from Sparta, Greece so I am going to assume you mean a Hoplite and not some random slob off the streets.

So between a Hoplite and a Samurai in full garb going hand-to-hand I will say the Samurai as they wore full body armor of a much heavier nature they could withstand far more blows. The battle could be made shorter still by a Samurai constantly hitting the unarmored thigh and arm sections of the Hoplite.

With weapons I would still go with the Samurai as the Hoplite spear weapon was prone to breakage and could easily be cut by a Samurai katana. Of course Hoplites carried a 60cm back up sword but as a katana is on average 65cm to 75cm long the advantage in length alone not to mention the superior cutting power of a katana makes the Hoplite sword a moot point. However in the time it takes for the Hoplite to drop his broken spear to draw his sword he would be dead anyway.

So clearly my answer is a Samurai would win most the time.
