I mean, there aren't any REAL instruments in rap. Just some guy/girl rhyming with a computer-generated beat behind it. I know there probably are SOME rap songs with REAL music, but that is very rare.

And they aren't really rapping 'poems' either, because who writes a poem about murder/drugs/sex/random gang violence?

i agree. they don't even sing most of the time. any guy can talk about parties, clubs, gangs, and grills. it's not music at all. i'd much rather listen to rock.

If it's instruments you need to make "real" music, there are a lot of rappers/rap groups that play real instruments, granted not the majority, but they do exist. Consider also what you would call a person singining with no musical accompaniment at all. Is it not music just because it's acapella? I don't think it's really fair to say that it's not music just because the vocals are delivered with more emphasis on rhythm than melody. A couple of generations ago, people said the same thing about rock and roll. It's not music, it's just noise. The truth of the matter is, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't music. It just means that you don't like it, and that's OK, no one's asking you to.

Well as time progresses and people change, The way we define things will as well. There was a time when the blues and rock 'n roll were considered nonsense and blatant noise, but we changed socially and now accept them both. So it seems only natural for some to take longer than others in accepting more electronic based music such as hip-hop and techno.
Also, most of the hip-hop songs produced today, though not actually performed with real instruments, are the emulations of actual instruments.
Melody+Passion+Sound= music
as far as I'm concerned, yes, hip-hop is most definitely real music. but oh i do hope some better hip-hop is played on the radio soon.

I don't like rap at all, but it is a creative expression and I do think it's music. As you said most of rap music is done with cheesy beats and instrumentals by a computer or keyboard, but I respect it...for the most part. That is why as boring and unpopular as classical and jazz music is, it shows real people with real talent using real instruments. There is a certain beauty in that kind of music that rap will never have!

Not music...mostly meaningless spoken word with simulated instrumental accompaniment. I saw some prominent black composer (can't recall his name) on TV refer to it as a "CELEBRATION OF IGNORANCE" and I fail to come up with a better description. I miss the good old days when popular black music had so much soul, that's what they called it--SOUL! (R.I.P. James Brown) Prince is a REAL musician. Why young blacks don't aspire to develop talent like that rather than emulate people like Fifty-Cent, Ludacris, etc. I'll never understand.

It's not just rap. A lot of today's "muzac" as I like to call it, in general is "HORRIBLE". So much repetition and so little meaning. How you you guys listen to that stuff?
Classic rock and mowtown. Now that's real music.

It takes a more extensive knowledge of language to make your lyrics flow in rap than it doesn in any other genre of music.
it also takes just as much talent to make the beat on the computer sound good as it does to make a tune on a guitar sond good.
people are entitled to their opinions but i have to say i find yours to be wrong

Me! I used to listen to it but not anymore....I can't stand it!! ("You can't spell crap without rap!!") Eminem, 50 Cent & all those others just get on my NERVES! Another is pop music....I can barely stand that stuff anymore either. UGH!
Now all I listen to is a variety of alternative/rock/metal. I'd list favorite bands for examples but that is irrelevant to this question. hehe. ;o)

i think i'd agree with you...its just someone talking with the beat, but i'd say that there are some talented rappers though. like with creativity, but i dont hate rap with an intense. its just ok but too much of it everywhere would be complete torture
