What makes you think there would have been a choice in what side you took? Alex Haley is from a mixed ancestry. Have you ever heard of "Queen"? She was a black woman. A daughter of a white master. Believe me she was treated black. Read his book or watch the movie adaptation. Blacks, even today, can be just as cruel as whites to people of mixed heritage.

I don't mean to sound cruel or racist, but I'd rather have been a black slave back then than a white indentured servant. At least they learned to take care of the slaves - if they didn't, it would cut into their profits. Slaves were worth too much to be overly mistreated.

An indentured servant's life was much, much harder. They weren't worth anything at all.

You would be considered black. Even 1/8th of black parentage marked you as black.
