If we did not have the 1st amendment, the open dialog that exist in the US right now wouldn't. If you don't agree with a current policy you would have no legal way to change it since you couldn't speak out about it, wouldn't be able to assemble to talk to others in public or private about it, and wouldn't be able print anything against the current rulership's desires.

Long term, this would lead to Jefferson's reasoning for the 2nd Amendment, "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in Government."
