I should add that he does NOT have a foot odor problem (I have a keen nose, so I feel very certain of this). He's just had his shoes for a long time and they have begun to smell so bad that they stink up the room!Yikes!

it may be time to buy a new pair of shoes. With new ones use oder eaters and make sure he wears thick absorbant socks with the shoes. If he just can't part with his current ones, try baking soda, or a baking soda based carpet refresher.

Well they way I do them is not to put them in the wash , I wet them then use the good old fashioned natural bar soap, I normally take the inner sole out as I find that it´s this that make the shoe smell, you can buy new ones in your chemist especially for sport shoes & when you think they need replacing easy to replace and more hygenic. So Give a good rub with the soap then in tepid water leave them soak like this for about 1 hr. then give them a good rinse making sure all the soap has gone. IThen if the weather permits I put them outside for air . but I have a little tip for getting shoes dry quick.this is not a joke. Fill the bottom of the shoes with rice just enough to cover the bottom of the shoes , then with clean clothes stuff them inside the shoe as many that you can fit in , leave them in a warm place , and by the next day they should be dry , I always do this after my kid´s have been out in the rain and they come home with there shoes soaked inside and out. it always works . Try it for yourself, PS , so it must be the inner soles you need to change?

stores like footlocker sell deodorizer sprays that you can spray inside your husband's shoes to get rid of the smell. as for a home remedy, you could try placing one sheet of (unused) fabric softener inside the shoe.

sprays will probably work better though if the odor is really strong.

Try putting baking soda in the shoes after you wash them just like you would with powder. You can also do that in his socks as well.
