They are important because they allow us to warship the way we want without interference from the government. The government can't tell you that you have to go to their church and warship their God. Freedom of speech is important because it allows you to speak your mind without the government locking you up for expressing your opinion. Freedom of the press keeps the government in check. The government cannot conduct things in secret and hide what they are doing from the American people. If we had a censored press then we would believe only what the government wanted us to believe. Freedom of assembly allows people to assemble peaceably. The government can't lock you up because you were out with your friends on the street talking to one another. It also allows the people to assemble in town hall meetings and discuss legislation without the government interfering. Which brings us to Freedom to petition the government. It allows people to petition the government to address their grievances in laws they think are unjust. The government can't go and lock you up just because you disagree with a law you think is unfair.

So the gov't goons don't come and pull you out of your bed in the middle of the night and fly you to a secret prison somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. Just because you have a Bush/Laden picture, disagree with their policies, protest the Iraq war practically on the front porch of the White House, or go on the record and call Bush a YAHOO. Get the idea?
