Without a doubt, Niklas Lidstrom...he is by far the best all-around defenseman in the game. He is never out of position, is an excellent power play quarterback and he shuts down the best players. And the best part is that he is not that physical, proving that you don't have to be a big hitter to be a good defenseman. All you that say Lidstrom's not the best because he doesn't hit must not value good, solid blue line play...I'd rather see a lifted stick than a missed hit and the resulting goal allowed.

Pronger. Lidstrom is good offensively and is sound positionally, but does not have a strong physical game. Pronger can play it any way you want it and knock your head off.
I used to think it was Niedermayer, but his game is very close to Lidstrom. Pronger is a combination of Lidstrom and Scott Stevens of old, which is quite rare.
The only player I see who has that kind of potential right now is perhaps Phaneuf.
To list my 10:
1. Pronger (Anaheim)
2. Lidstrom (Detroit)
3. Niedermayer (Anaheim)
4. Phaneuf (Calgary)
5. McCabe (Toronto)
6. Chara (Boston)
7. Souray (Montreal)
8. Rafalski (NJ)
9. Kaberle (Toronto)
10. Zubov (Dallas)
These are all based on all around play, not just scoring, as well as being healthy and consistent year-in and out, sometimes on bad teams.

Here is my top ten, based on overall play in no particular order:
Pronger (Anaheim)
Lidstrom (Detroit)
Niedermayer (Anaheim)
Rafalski (NJ)
Chara (Boston)
Phaneuf (Flames)
Regehr (Flames)
Gonchar (Penguins)
Boyle (TB)
Timonen (Nashville)
But this forgets who is playing with them. Phaneuf is better when paired with Hamrlik. McCabe seems to get the spotlight only because he is with TO. Sami Salo can't tell if he is defensively good or saved by Luongo (that entire team is Luongo it seems). But unfortunately stats is all that matters, so someone from a low scoring team with few points will never be the best that year, just like a run and gun defenseman with a lot of points and a neutral plus/minus.

Nick Lidstrom (Red Wings)
Chris Pronger (Ducks)
Scott Niedermayer (Ducks)
Rob Blake (Kings)
Dion Phaneuf (Flames)
Brian Campbell (Sabres)
Kimmo Timonen (Preditors)
Robyn Regehr (Flames)
Roman Hamrlik (Flames)
Sergei Gonchar (Penguins)
These would have to be my top 10 in the NHL. Just about all theres guys have great +/- and I think this critcal in being a top defenseman. Why would you put a guy who lets up more goals when he is out there then his team scores?
