Yes, indeed they are and they are formed by standing waves in the wind flowing over mountain ranges. They are curved and look a little bit like a convex lens. They are a very good sign of mountain wave turbulence.

Yes. They are usually caused by mountain waves and are quite common over Mt Rainier here in the Pacific Northwest.
