What are you using the printer for, primarily? Do you need color?
If the latter is "no," then get a laser-printer. You have illustrated one of the biggest scams in printers, be they All-In-One or your basic inkjet. Sure, the printer is relatively inexpensive (here, you can use the word "cheap"), but there is no obvious documentation that states how many copies your cartridges will net, is there? One will end up paying through the nose (I'm mostly familiar with US currency, but I think the effect is the same where you are!) for those inefficient color cartridges, only to have them dry up from lack of use. What's worse, some machines will not allow copies to be made if any one of the cartridges is out of ink. For instance, if you are trying to print a text document, you will not be able to print it if you are out of cyan, even though you only need black.
My advice is to bite the proverbial bullet and get a more expensive machine, whether for just B&W copies, or color. The amount of money you save in the long run will more than make up for your up front cost, and the cartridges can be refillable (or at least, recycled). Best wishes

i ALSO have epson stylus 440 and i would say i have done some work with this including wedding stationary.
It turned out brillian. Choice do the cartridges for these.
one can get an offer of 4 bw and 2 colour for about £15.

hi
the best thing is to avoid inkjet printers totally
if its just black printing go for a laserjet HP quality is very good
at under £100 down to £75 the toners last a long time and dont clog like inkjets if not used that often
If its colour your after then £200 £250 will get you a HP colour laser superb quality compared to an inkjet
color toner is about £40 each but last much longer wont dry up wont smudge when handled
will work out cheaper in the long run less hassle and much better quality
i know have had lexmark epson hp inkjets

The Canon range of printers have always given me good service, Why not just buy a printer and keep the Lexmark for scanning only rather than another all in one device. Choice stationery supplies on the web sell good replacement cartridges for canon at a good price especially if you buy multipacks.

I have an Okidata laser printer and it works wonders for me. I use it on a HEAVY DUTY basis to print all of my eBooks. If you're planning to use the printer to print out spreadsheets and office stuff, Okidata will promise you many years.
It's a bit expensive though, and if you're just planning to do a little printing hear and there, try buying a second hand HP or something. Don't buy Dell, I see Dell laser printer selling on eBay for a fraction of it's Manufactured Suggested Retail Price. Dell laser printer is flooded on EBay and selling for a fraction of its suggest retail price, something just got to be wrong.
Anyways, I think everyone will tell you 'their' printer is the best, of course, we're bias, so do some searching for yourself. Here is a website that is kind of like The Consumer's Report. Use it and do a search on the printer you are planning on buying and read other people's reviews on the printer.
Hope it helps.

Epson printers are meant to be really cheap to refill and they are also reliable, my friend had one. i know you said you arent happy with the printer you have now but i know for most printers whsmiths sell their own version of the ink catridge, if you take it in and show them they can advise you, i have a lexmark z100, i did that it worked out alot cheaper than the lexmark ink cartridges. check whsmiths online to see if they have your model of ink refill? hope thats some help. x

OK, I'm going over your budget, I know. But, the savings you will make are stunning. My ink carts work out at forty pence each.
Heres HOW...
This is a Continuous Ink Supply System
http://www.inkexpress.co.uk/index.php?p=ecom&dowhat=fullinfo&prodid=450
And, for you, I found a printer
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EPSON-Stylus-R340-PHOTO-CD-DVD-INKJET-Colour-PRINTER-BN_W0QQitemZ290086062508QQihZ019QQcategoryZ178QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
as ever, with E-bay, be fast!!!
Personally, I got an Epson 320 +system last Xmas, printed about 500 photos et al, got a second lot (600ml=£20) still going strong. Epson carts contain about 13ml of ink, by the way. Do your own sums!!!!!

Might I suggest going with a lazer printer? Fast printing, and you don't need to replace the ink toner nearly as much.
I have a lazer printer from "Brother". I'm happy with it so far.
Only con is that affordable lazer printers are black only.
If you want a color lazer, it's gonna be a lot more.

i used to have a lexmark too and you can imagine the relief when it broke and it came to replace it!
the cannon mp360 is a good all in one and prints photo quality on the right settings too.
i can also recommend Epson stylus dx4800 the cartridges are not too expensive and you can get them quite cheap from www.cartridgemonkey.com
hope this helps
