Top 5:

1-Cowboy Bebop
(quite simply put, as good as it gets)

2-Haibane Renmei
(This one really surprised me, the overall quality, originality, story was unbeleivable)

3-Last Exile
(Really good anime pretty much for the same reasons as Haibane Renmei, but ended just a little abruptly)

4-Graveyard of the Fireflies
(a real gem, excellent quality, story, and pretty original but it really couldn't draw the viewer in to the same extent as it could have because of time restrictions (something like Haibane Renmei views a little more like a 5-6 hour movie than a series) but still a classic)

5-A tie between:
-Akira
(a classic that helped redefine the genere)
-Metropolis
(just wasn't quite as good as Graveyard of the Fireflies, but still earned a spot)
-Naruto
(a great anime so far that has excellent originality, a solid story, and quality, while avoiding many of the pitfalls of a large series)

Popular anime that were omitted:

-Rourouni Kenshin
(The story really dropped off in the last couple of seasons...It became almost painful to watch near the end, there was really no sense of closure once the series finished either, the OVA's dont count as part of the series)

-Rourouni Kenshin 1st OVA
(very good stuff, close but no cigar)

-Inuyasha
(this one is shaping up to be a more serious version of pokemon, it was good for the first season or 2 but now the storyline is dragging on with no end in sight)

-Trigun
(its good but it didnt really get off the ground story wise until about the 8th or 10th episode)

-Evangelion
(good but not quite good enough)

-ANY GUNDAM you would care to name
(usually these have very good animation quality (especially seed) but the storyline is dragged on for as long as possible and lacks originality)

-Love Hina, Fullmetal Panic+fumofuu
(funny stuff, but the storyline seriously lacked direction)

I've been around for a while but im sure there are a few hidden gems that i'm missing, series/movies that never really hit mainstream but which are nonetheless superb.

What are your top 5?

Hmmm, I'm sure a thread of this nature already exists but I can't find it. A cookie for anyone who tells me where it's located if it does.

But anyway, moving the thread into General Anime where is does belong.

I will pick some of your omitted animes: Trigun, Evangelion, Kenshin OVA, Hellsing and two movies are Ninja Scroll, and Princess Mononoke..

LuciaMelody2003-11-25, 12:06
U forgot Spirited Away! Flawless animation and story!

Also, I think Utena deserves to be in the list. As the most unique anime.

I would also want to put in Princess Tutu for animation and story - but I havn't finished watching it yet, so it wouldn't be fair...

I cannot decide, so I will just list the animes that has inspired me for the past twenty years I have been watching anime.

In no particular order (some, i do not know official English title):

Nausicaa Valley of Wind
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Future Boy Conan
Alps no Shoujo Heidi
Dog of Flanders
Kidousenshi Gundam (original 1979 version, and I, II, and III movies)
Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Space Cruiser? sorry, don't know English title)
Galaxy Express 999
Lupin III - The 2nd TV series
Lupin III vs Fukuseiningen
Lupin III Caligostro's Castle
Choujikuu-yousai Macross (including the movie "Ai oboete imasuka")
Kidousenshi Z Gundam
Kidousenshi Gundam ZZ
Kidousenshi Gundam - Char's Counterattack
Kidousenshi Gundam 0083 (including the movie Stardust Memories)
Hotaru no Haka (Graveyard of Fireflies? sorry don't know English title)
Five Star Stories
Haha o tazunete 3000ri
Urusei Yatsura
Maison Ikkoku
Hokuto no Ken
CITY HUNTER
animes made by the late Tezuka Osamu (Ribbon no Kishi, Tetsuwan Atom, etc.)
Ganso, Tensai Bakabon (in many ways a definite Akatsuka Fujio classic)
Doraemon (in many ways, a definite Fujiko F. Fujio classic...I wished he were still alive ToT)
Sazae-san (in many ways, Hasegawa Machiko has lead us Japanese through the years of post-war growth through this national pasttime anime)
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (R,S,SS included, Stars excluded)
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z (Toriyama Akira had inspired me since Arare-chan, but DB is what defines my early childhood years in the 1980s, moreso as it continued well into the mid 1990s)
Cardcaptor Sakura (in many ways, it was a very moe- anime)
Voices of a Distant Star (Shinkai Makoto is my current favorite director)
AKIRA (it is very sad nowadays we cannot see such a high quality cel-based motion picture anymore)

other animes are very great in their own respective ways. However in a sense how they have affected me in my life for the past twenty years, these animes stand out personally as a vivid memory of my years.

Spirited Away was good but I really didnt feel as drawn in as with something like Grave of the Fireflies, the audience reaction just wasn't there.

Some of the animatrix shorts (the haunted house one especially) were also very nicely done too.

havnt really had a chance to get a hold of Utena or Princess Tutu...I probably should one of these days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wao2003-11-27, 08:06
Hm... This isn't really 5 but...

Rurouni Kenshin - Tokyo & Kyoto arc, as well as Tsuiokuhen OVA, as well as (not really anime) the FULL Seisouhen arc inthe manga

(I refuse to accept the last arc of the TV series as part of the story, because it was, IMO, sucky fillers made because they didn't want to wait patiently for Watsuki to finish Seisouhen and wanted to milk out money... and then when they animated Seisouhen they left out all the interesting stuff like Rakuninmura. :<)

Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna (I don't care if it's preachy. ;P)

Just about every single Ghibli movie!

Princess Tutu (While I was sick of watching the last parts of the first few eps as they were so sweet and predictable, later it got quite good - and all the good stuff is hidden, you need to think and then you realise, DAMN this has some good things... and who can't resist Tchaikovsky :D)

Gunslinger Girl (So far... I dunno what it is, I just like it. The OP also >you)

Aaaah, I forgot the rest. :|

Last Exile was pretty nice...

Arr, I'll throw in FLCL as well. Crazy as hell, but that's the point. XP

I could never order my favorites. So in no particular order, the 5 best anime I've ever seen.

GTO - I have yet to find anything like it. It's funny, a little ecchi, a little dramatic, and has some of the best character development ever. Onizuka is my idol, and the plot devices are simply genius, without resorting to cliche. Like most great things, it ended before it's time. The ending wasn't up to expectations, but luckily there's manga. Regardless of the fact that this didn't live long enough to properly end, it's still one of the most unique and amazing shows I've ever seen.

Cowboy Bebop - Too unique, amazing characters, music, this is just obvious.

Grave of the Fireflies - Such a gripping film. I literally had tears in my eyes during nearly the ENTIRE film. I'm really lucky I watched this one alone.

GITS SAC - This is just a marvel of modern anime. The production is through the roof, and nearly everything about this show oozes greatness.

Jungle Guu Deluxe - The TV show was definately good, but there were some definite mixed bag episodes. The Deluxe OVA was pretty much, all out funniness, all the way through. I laughed harder during the "Final Punch" scene than I've ever laughed at anything in my entire life.

Honorable mention - Full Metal Panic (season 1, and Fumoffu) For all intents and purposes I consider these 2 seasons to be a complete and single entity, as the Fumoffu season is largely filler from the manga fit into place of the first season. The characters for the show are amazing well designed and developed.

First off Ninja Scroll, i saw this when i rather young lol regardless very interesting and violent -- Hey lookie a blood fountain --

Second Nadesico, I loved the way it poked fun at anime genres. Keep that in mind the next time you watch it lol it might make sense in a new way. I didn't get Prince of Darkness tho.

Third, quite appart Full Metal Panic, it was a killer the idea of a sergent in highschool i still healthing from the splits it left in my sides.

Fourth, Trigun very emotional ups and downs i really liked it.

Last and certainly not least, Chobits lol dont flame me for it, really nothing special, ceot it the first anime my girlfriend sat down and watched together Chiii!

BTW, death to cowboy bebop :P lol

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xiandu2003-11-28, 07:44
Wow i can't imagine only choosing just 5. I have loved so many shows over the years. I will however pick ones that i feel are important to me as an anime fan.

No particular order here either:

1. Love Hina- first show that showed me that drama love stories can be really entertaining and make me almost piss myself several times.

2. Cowboy Bebop- THE series that got me to start watching episodic anime because i thought it was too costly and not good enough to offset the purchase prices, and showed me that you can put many characters together and like most of em.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion- the second series to solidify that series anime rocks. Also really screwed me up in the head. Didn't think anime could make you think like that. Though the ending could have made a bit more sense so that i didn't lose many many hours of thought and discussion on it and still have no conclusion.

4. Grave of the Fireflies- Another anime that showed me something that i was not aware of. That was that animation can instill many emotions. Thought provoking yes but enough to make you cry no, well boy was i wrong. I have not cried so much watching anything as i did with this movie.

5. Ninja Scroll(movie)- The anime that got me to watch anime in the first place. At that time in my life i was growing out of cartoons and a friend said to try this movie because it rocked. Thought it was going to being like all cartoons. Boy was i shocked by how bad *** it was. Been hooked on anime ever since.

Now there are many many many other shows and anime that i love to death but i would take way too much space to talk about them.

My movies' top 5:
Jin Roh
Hotaru no Haka
Laputa, the castle in the sky
Perfect Blue
Ghost in the Shell

blue seed 9
neon genisis
naruto
saikano
escaflowne

thats my top five.........blue seed i only got to watch till volume 8 or 9.....but i remember it as if i watched the whole series..i was very captivated by it.

saikano just rocked.... at the beginning it was kinda boring but all that bordom made the last parts really good.

neon genisis was my first (real)anime(and i was young at that age..so i would like to watch it again cause i know i missed a lot of stuff.

escaflowne ruled...except when FOX aired it on TV

naruto is ruling...i liked inuyasha...but then caught a wiff at this and was like wow...this is how a long anime is supposed to stay interesting....not by putting 10-15 minutes of flashbacks in each episode....and the same one at that...and the story is much better then inuyasha.

now.........there was an anime i watched on UPN on sunday mornings that i will never forget..it was really my first(though i didnt consider it an anime cause it was in english). hte name of it was TEKNOMAN....then i learned it was called tekeman in Japan. i just loved it...and i didnt get to finish it...i only got up to when the sister kills herself and destroys the two other bots. and then there is only the big bad guy left and another one of the regular bad guys(though still strongest of the "weak" ones)

well..enough ramblings.

You guys make me feel really old because most people's anime favorites are so recent. I notice the list from TV-Asahi has a lot of really old-time stuff like Ginga Tetsudou 999 or Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Star Blazers, which I watched religiously in grade school). I'm not that old-time, but here's my favorites:

1. Maison Ikkoku - The BEST epic romantic comedy story ever, with the BEST ending. Manga is even better! When you compare this to modern shows, you see how market-driven the newer stuff is. Nowadays they always leave things hanging so they can have the possibility of a sequel. Not with MI. You get the satisfaction.

2. Kidou Senshi Gundam 0083 - This was one of the definitive mecha combat anime until Macross Plus came around. Still, it retains that old-school fighting spirit that is lost on more avant garde characters like Shinji (of Eva).

3. Tenkuu no Escaflowne - This was maybe the first of the OVA-quality anime that happened to be a TV series. Blew it's contemporaries out of the water with great art, Yoko Kanno soundtrack, and big story. The drawback is some aspects were too cerebral.

4. Macross Plus - Yeah, this was a jaw dropper when the first episode was shown to us at Anime Expo on a big screen. Spine tingling. And that was only the first episode. It only got better from there. Super amazing combat sequences, showing that "emotion" can be injected into the dogfight scenes that can't really be duplicated with CG.

5. Initial D - Maybe not as great as the others, but I'll stick this in because I am a club racer, and Keiichi Tsuchiya (who was a consultant for this show) is someone I admire. This show may be about street/touge racing, but it does accurately depict racing techniques like heel and toe, and demonstrates oversteer/understeer concepts. It takes some liberties with physics, but wraps it up in an amazingly compelling (and often inadvertently amusing) story that makes you root for Takumi all the way until he decides on his future career in the movie. The "11,000 rpm" scene was priceless. Lots of exaggeration and clichés, but I'll deal with it.

Current favorites (not all-time like the above)

1. Full Metal Panic Fummofu - Better than the first season because it took the strongest aspect of the first season (the comedy and interplay between characters) and distilled it until it was 150 proof! These great stories gave me the motivation to finish reading my first novel in Japanese.

2. Ai Yori Aoshi - Very sweet story. The manga is even better. Today I just bought manga volume 12 and powered through it in one sitting.

3. Last Exile - This is going to rise up to my all-time favorite list someday. But it is on probation here until it proves that it stands the test of time. Super beautiful compositing of scenes that blend the CG and hand animated parts. Great epic story. A little too much borrowed from other shows in the character department.

4. Yawara! - I had heard of this for years, but now I get to see it. Super good so far! Hooray for Live-Evil for making it available!

5. Ghost in the Shell SAC - Okay, after the weirdness of the Gits movie, I was skeptical. But SAC is a Gits universe I can understand and enjoy. Doesn't get too bogged down in the philisophical BS. Just good intrigue and ***-kicking! I have also read the comic book, which was quite good.

Gansan not to be rude, but how old are you. See for me I listed some new animes because I only got into anime at the age of 19. I saw my first anime at age 15-16 but really didn't know how big the industry was in Japan. I'm now 25 and while I haven't watched alot of the old stuff seeing as it is still hard to find, i watch a ton of stuff nowdays and that too makes it hard to see the older stuff. I will agree with you though, I loved 0083 and several other Gundam series. Like in my post earlier it is impossible to just say I have a top 5 because I like so many other shows. I like so many other shows for different reasons and it greatly depends on my mood and what kind of anime will satisfy that mood. Just so damn impossible to just pick 5. So I picked the 5 that showed me something new when I watched them. They may not be the best of their catagory but they did have a huge impact on me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Radd2003-11-29, 09:07
Seems memory doesn't go back all that far around here. I'm with Gansan, you people make me feel old, and I'm only 25!

Since I have so many favourites myself, despite being so damned picky about what I like, I'll lump franchises together.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Everything from the original SDF Macross, the absolutely incredible 'Do You Remember Love?', and Macross Plus, to the wonderful Macross 7 and the jaw dropping Macross Zero. In fact, the only Macross that falls short isn't even an official part of the franchise and was made without the original creators' input, (that being Macross II: Lover's Again, a mediocre rehash of 'DYRL?'.)

The Macross franchise has always been one of my favourites, ever since it appeared on American television, heavily edited and dumbed down, as Robotech in mid 80's.

Leiji Matsumoto's works, Captain Herlock, Galaxy Express 999, Space Battleship Yamato (Starblazers), Cosmos Warrior Zero, etcetera. Good, good stuff. Very oldschool. Right down to the classical style dialogue and beliefs of the characters. It helps that I absolutely adore Matsumoto's style and designs.

Yokoyama Mitsuteru's works, such as Giant Robo, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Tetsujin 28(Gigantor). I definitely want to see more of Mitsuteru's shows, if they retain the high quality storytelling and excellent style of what I have seen.

King of Braves: Gao Gai Gar is definitely one of the best Transformers style shows out there. Machine Robo Rescue fans take note, as I belive the same creative forces are behind the two shows, but I'd have to say that GGG is decidedly the better of the two. See for yourself though, you might disagree on that, however you might enjoy the show all the same.

Here's where it gets really tough. Do I name the works of Miyazake? Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, Laputa and the Castle in the Sky, and many others?

Do I name Lupin III, one of the greatest franchises to come out of Japan?

Do I name both, as Miyazake did direct Lupin III: Castle Cagliostro?

What about Gundam? Certainly a respectable franchise, though Macross is of the same genre and I believe it to be the better series as Gundam tends to get either redundant, or just plain crappy with the AU shows like Wing.

Rose of Versailles is certainly worth mentioning, an excellent show.

I can't sing enough praises for Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and so it shall be my 5th choice for a favourite. Rheindhart, Kircheise, Yang Wenli and all of the rest. This show definitely shows that anime can be so much more than the stereotypical giant robots and fan service. This show is intelligent, very plot and character heavy (often introducing 3 or 4 important new characters almost every other episode). Many political, philosophical, and moral questions are brought up, and the twist and turns of the show never cease to amaze. There are several points in the series where, unless you have absolutely no soul or feelings, it is practically gauranteed you will cry. I certainly hope Legend of the Galactic Heroes makes it out on DVD in the U.S. It could very well be the most important release of this decade.

wao2003-11-29, 09:23
That reminds me, I also liked Now And Then Here And There. I wish they'd release Lupin III here, I always wanted to watch that.

And if Legend of the Galactic Heroes is as good as you say, then I might download it... It probably won't come out in DVD any time soon because it appears not to be licensed....

Last Exile (Aargh, Alex died... :()
Gundam Seed/Wing (Puu... Mwu died... Sigh...)

If you think you are old at 23 years old, well, you are horribly wrong.

Ah, right, this thread is about a Top5 anime...

Well, my favourite is Aline Nine, Cant think of anything under that right now.

OMchan2003-11-29, 13:31
My 5 are ...

- Full Metal Panic [1 & 2]
- Get Backers
- Gundam SEED
- Inu Yasha
- NARUTO

And yeah, I haven't seen enough to judge which are the best. ^^;; But NARUTO might to somewhere up there ...

Gansan2003-11-29, 16:37

I'm 32. I didn't mean anything negative by my "recent" comment; as you say, it's difficult to get a hold of the old anime. I didn't really get into anime until college. Until then it was just cartoons from Japan that I would occasionally see.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kempis Curious2003-11-29, 17:14
The OP says Top 5 anime of all time. That sounds like a discussion of the most important or ground-breaking animes to hit Japan and the West, like My Neighbor Totoro, Urusei Yatsura, Macross, Gundam, or Akira.

But that's kinda dull, I'd rather list my personal favs. :D

1. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - An anime that totally goes against good marketing sense and does pure art. Peaceful, beautiful, and mysterious. And therefore few people like it. :(

2. Kodocha (minus the New York story arc) (I always feel free to disregard the part of an anime that sucks if the good part is stellar :D) - Weird and hilarious in the beginning to draw you in, it gained a LOT of depth as it went along which kept it extremely interesting. I remember that I would often involuntarily whisper "awesome" when the closing theme came up.

3. Ranma 1/2 (first season) - One of the first fansubs I saw, and I couldn't put it down... it gives me goosebumps it is so funny, beautiful, and the characters were far more "real" than any live-action show I've ever seen. The character development and romance were on par with Maison Ikkoku, so it was going to be cancelled due to low ratings, but was revived when it was retooled to be wackier. I guess most people who like fighting action/comedies get turned off by that cerebral stuff... DAMN THEM!

4. Mahou Tsukai Tai OVA - This anime is the kind that I like best: beautiful, funny, exciting, and a little sexy. :) Also, a lot of the story is told with little details... so the anime rewards you for paying attention (or watching it multiple times.)

5. Princess Tutu (first 13 episodes) - Beautiful, scary, intriguing, weird, and cute all at the same time, this anime is absolutely wonderful... especially if you appreciate ballet and orchestrated music. The first episode still holds the Kempis Curious Award for "Best 1st Episode I've Ever Seen in my Life". The second season seemed like it was written after everything was wrapped up well enough in ep 13... rather disappointing and could easily be skipped.

eek...I just found out how sad I am by actually KNOWING all those animes.

Whew! That makes me feel better. :)

I've only seen 41 of the 100 listed back there, and I've never heard of about 25 of them.

It's very interesting how that list containsvery few recent anime, and the anime which is often considered critical to western interest, Akira, is so far down the list.

No offense taken Gansan. I really love anime and would give the older stuff a chance if i could ever get a hold of it. Now i admit some of the old stuff style may not be my fav but i can like the story. Perfect example is Metropolis, now it isn't an old anime but the style the movie had is, but the story of that movie was amazing. Since i base my love of anime 90% on story, i don't care if the animation isn't top notch or the older style. Hell i love the original Gundam still. And far as the anime not being the top but only the biggest impact on the west comment. Umm why do you think they had an impact on the west? Well let me tell you, because they deserve to be on everyone's top list. To say they don't is dumb imo.

whyjnot4202003-12-08, 01:14
this one has to be separated into 2 groups, movies and series

movies first so....

5) Jin-Roh:The Wolf Brigade - just the most messed up retelling of little red riding hood EVER

4) The Animatrix (all but The Final Flight of the Osiris) - everything except the first story was awesome and i cant get enough of it, comon program is incerdible

3) Spriggan - everyones gonna hate me but i think this movie is 200x better than Akiria, hate me if u want to

2) Princess Mononoke - Miyazaki at his second best

1) Nausicaa of the valley of Wind - Miyazaki at his best, nuff said

now on to the series

5) FLCL - god i loved this one of the most messed up animes of all time

4) Haibane Renmei - didnt like this show the first time i tried watching it, got rid of it, forgot about it, got it again, fell in love with it, i just love how open the storyline is while still maintaining a real layer of depth for the charecters, anfter watching it a couple of times u really feel like u understand the charecters

3) Get Backers - for some reason i just love this show its funny, got action, a deep storyline(kinda)

2) Naruto - crazy ninja chit cant get better than thisits the only show (american or Japanese) that i watch religiously

1) Last Exile - i got sucked into this to the point where it took me all of 2 days to watch the entire series, the ending leaves a little lacking but that aside this anime and the imagination of it sucked me in like no other anime, the only other thing that i can tink of would be the manga of Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elin2003-12-08, 06:20
Eh, my parents are somewhat anti-anime, so finding time to watch it isn't easy... I s'pose I could make a top 5 though, though I'm yet to sample so many shows ^^

1. Tonari no Totoro
Mreh, beautiful film, better than any other kids film I've seen... In fact, it's barely fair to call it a kids film, it's too uneventful for your average kid's attention span, it has appeal to people like me who despite having grown up are still children at heart ;)

2. Azumanga Daioh
I'd suppose it's largely like it or loathe it, I know a lot of big anime fans who nevertheless really don't like Azumanga Daioh, but to me certainly, it was just so funny. It almost made me wish I had a few more years of high school left...almost :P

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
I remember reading somewhere that Gainax began to run out of money towards the end of Evangelion, so the last few episodes are somewhat lower budget or something. Truth be known I didn't notice, in fact, pretty soon into the series, I sort of forgot it was animated at all. It's one of the most gripping shows, anime or nay, I've ever watched, and contrary to a lot of peoples opinions, I actually really, really liked the ending...made me think a lot. The only reason it's not my favourite is because it's such an emotional endeavour to watch...

4. Grave of the Fireflies
Because I'm a big crybaby at heart, and Grave of the Fireflies is just one of the saddest, most disturbing films I've ever seen... I cry a fair bit, but rarely at films, Grave was an exception... It's just a wonderful anti-war statement, as well as an entertaining, if utterly melancholy, film. I've never watched it since the first time I saw it, and I'm not sure if I ever will. To put myself through the anguish of doing so again is not something I relish the thought of doing...

5. Vision of Escaflowne
Woo, I had a heck of a time watching this one ^^ As a love story, Escaflowne succeeds magnificently, but also manages to tell a truly intriguing and well plotted fantasy story, with a wonderful cast to boot... It's also just got the coolest soundtrack ever :)

Other anime I like are Shaman King, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Fruits Basket and Love Hina. As well as all of Studio Ghibli's films. Come January I'll have a better PC and I should be able to watch more ^_^

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Domasai2003-12-08, 06:29
TOP FIVE

1) Millennium Actress
2) Cowboy Bebop
3) Naruto
4) Fruits Basket
5) FLCL

Well I think that's ecclectic enough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

lighter junkie2003-12-08, 13:45
Well, here's mine to add to the collection, they're probably covered in the choices before me, but hack, here they are:

WITCH HUNTER ROBIN

FLCL

Senkaiden Houshin Engi- I have a feeling that this one doesn't really get much attention these days, but it's actually one of the best I've ever seen, Nataku had like...really awesome powers. BLAST!!!!!!

Samurai Deeper Kyo- I liked it better than Kenshin, but the ending was a little dreadful. anyhow, i loved it.

Peace Maker Kurogane - Greatness defined.

just for the hack of it, here's a few of my runner-ups. XD

Spirited Away
Millenium Actress
Saiyuki
SLAM DUNK!- This is a classic, so funny it made me puke...more than once, too bad the video quality hasn't improved much over the years, otherwise it'd make the top 5.

Prince of Tennis
One Piece

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CrimsonFury2003-12-08, 15:29
My Favs are
1. Hellsing
2 Cowboy Bebop
3. Kenshin(kicked alot of[bleep], however after shishio i found it really went downhill)
4. GetBackers
5. Naruto (only this low, cause there's too much of this series left to know where its gonna go)

Hard to Leave out

Record of Lodoss War:Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
Outlaw Star
Inuyasha
Trigun
Gundam Wing - Just staright Gundam Wing(hated Gundam G, and the other I just didn't like nearly as much)
Vampire Hunter D
Akira
Jin Roh

There's just too many good ones out there

BTW i'll leave a plug here Watch Chrno Crusader

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kempis Curious2003-12-09, 04:24
2) Princess Mononoke - Miyazaki at his second best

1) Nausicaa of the valley of Wind - Miyazaki at his best, nuff said

Have you seen Porco Rosso? I think that was the best one yet. ^_^
I also don't agree that Ghibli puts out all great stuff, Omoide Poro Poro, Umi wa Kikoeru (sp?), and Pon Pon Tanuki were kinda boring for me. Beautiful and great music, but slow for the most part.

Well there are a hell of a lot of Animes to pick from...not that I really have watched them all but I've seen a fair few ¬_¬ lol...anyhow, my faves would be:

1: Serial Experiments Lain
It changed the way I think about everything in this world and in dreams, I can no longer look at telegraph poles or computers in the same way again, lol. I liked Lain herself too, she reminded me of myself a lot...

2: Kanon
I'm not sure that many people share the same views as me on this Anime but I thought it was phenomenal. It surprised me in the plot twist and I think I had to get the tissues out at least 30 times throughout the story. The characters were in depth, not to mention cute and I thought it was absolutely marvellous. Ayu-Chan is soooooo cute!

3: Chobits
This Anime brings back a lot of memories for me because it was one of the first that I ever saw. It had a really great plot and was one of the only Animes (much like Lain) that had me "glued to the screen" lol. I liked the ending as well...and I bought the three main soundtracks practically as soon as I watched the ending XD

4:Kodomo no Omocha
I haven't actually watched this all the way through so I'm not sure if it turned out for the good. I posted this Anime because it brings back great memories of the Summer Holidays, watching Anime with my bro when he came home from school (after finishing my exams I had like 2 months off when he was still at school XD).

5: Cardcaptor Sakura
Again with the memories, I used to watch this with my brother an my Gran after coming back from school. I loved the characters and the music was phenomenal. I have the 4CD boxset of the soundtrcaks because I saved up for ages to buy it at only like 12 years old...it took a while ;_; lol

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hiromu Tagushi2003-12-09, 19:47
Spirited Away (they shouldn't change the name in brazil.. 'a viagem de chihiro' eck..)
FuriKuri (very comical and the musics are very good too..)
Sailor Moon (i like all the seasons)
Lain (gothyc style)
Kenshin (the ova is rox....! the serie too)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

scryed_20032003-12-10, 14:36
Naruto
Hajime No Ippo
Initial D
Laputa
Trigun

and many would agree with me.

I've seen many, many series and this anime was my #2. :) How far did you get on this anime? Did you get as far as the movie-making arc, or the New York story arc? That movie arc was probably the most gripping anime I'd ever seen.
I'm still confused as to why this anime is so hard to find online, or why digisubbers haven't been tripping over each other to fansub it... especially when so many people place it so high on their favorite anime lists even though it is rare.

2.Excel Saga: lol, this is a super funny anime. I just have a thing for comedies. ^_^

4.G Gundam: I just liked it. It was cool. This is one of the only few Mecha animes I actully liked. ^_^

I think it's funny that people say things like, "I liked this show despite the old drawing style". I actually prefere more unique looking styles to the run of the mill, blurring together, generic anime style. Shows like Giant Robo, Metropolis, and Galaxy Railways rank highly with me BECAUSE of the wonderfully unique styles used in each.

Still, I think these 'What's your top favourite anime!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!11one" threads are fairly useless. I much prefere threads like the one asking _why_ you liked or disliked certain anime.

Just series, not "stand-alone" OAVs or Movies (like FLCL or Porco Rosso):

My #1 that towers above all else

1 - Neon Genesis Evangelion
Despite a horribly stupid title (wtf is "Neon Genesis" supposed to mean... The japanese title "New Century Evangelion" just is so much better and more relevant), it made me change my outlook on people in general. It made me understand what depressed and miserable people go through, amongst other things.

And , in no particular order

- Last Exile
I'm quite into aviation, learning to fly myself. The whole series blew me away, a gripping tale from the 1st episode onwards.
"Ahhhh ! It's Silvana ! The annihilator !"

- Love Hina
I laughed my head off watching this, even though i'm not into that kind of anime (you know, 100% fanservice for men, guy surrounded by large breasted cute girls, etc...).

- GTO
Funny as h*ll, full of relevant social critiscism and teaches you not to judge people to quickly (even if the schoolkids are imaginary, they're strangely believable).

- Banner of the Stars
How can you not sympathise with a ruthless galactic empire that will remove the atmosphere off a planet if its inhabitants create too many problems, or that has created a copy of Hell in the purpose of exacting retribution ? Hee hee hee... Although I must admit one must be a fan of the Space Opera genre to appreciate this.

Many series other people have picked are favorites and many are great shows but these series really deserve all the love I can give them...

1. (and definitely my favorite) Tenshi ni Narumon! It's got interesting visual style, gorgeous and improbable (and lovable) characters (Silky-sama!), lush music and the wackiest mecha ever (including a flying machine that runs on, erm, methane- it's important to eat lots of beans and stuff before flying it...). The story is MUCH darker and sadder than many people would think if they haven't seen the whole series; I found it cathartic.

2. Akihabara Dennou Gumi is a parody of magical girls anime with excellent characterization, solid SF and some conspiracy theory tossed into the plot. It's got good visual quality (designs similar to Saber J) and the most Okui Masami music I ever heard packed into one show (the rest of the music is great too). It's recently been licensed after sitting around for like 4 years in limbo; I hope the show gets some more love when it comes out 'cause I wanna see a sub of the movie ^_^;;;

3. Chou Kuse ni Narisou is a cheapo comedy based on a Nakyoshi manga from the early 90s. It's endearingly cheezy and goofy, with noticably LOW visual quality and tacky music (you can even hear when they recycle the seiyuu at times). The main character (Nagisa) is an idol singer with a terrible voice; you get to hear her same 2 or 3 lousy songs in the show over and over again. But if it was mediocre it would suck...

The writing is tight and funny though. There are references to things like 60s spy films, student terrorism in Japan (back in the late 60s), and urban legends (there's a whole episode about what happens to pet alligators who get flushed down the toilet). There's even a show about how crappy Nagisa is at singing! And I have to mention Momoko, Nagisa's insane scene-stealing rival, who stages a bizarre street performance in every episode!

4. Oniisama E. I love the carefully crafted visual design, the heavy relationships (it's almost like there's no plot; the characters just get together and BAM!), the incredible voice acting, even the enka music, which just fits right in... Shoujo Kakumei Utena without the training wheels.

5. Shin Seiki Evangelion.

My favorite movie is Patlabor WXIII.

Wah.... to say the least I am very impressed at how popular this thread is and how useful it has been to me. I originally posted it in an attempt to dredge up some of the old hidden gems that weren't really on the net for watching and now I have enough titles to last me well until i get my iron ring....

anyway Thank You all for your submissions I am really enjoying many of your suggestions <^.^>

My top 5 all time fave Anime would be:

1 - Neon Genesis Evangelion

Quite simply the deepest, most thought provoking show I have ever watched. I have seen about 7 times now and I absolutely love it.

2 - Naruto

An absolute pleasure to watch, brilliantly drawn, fantastic music, deep and involving plotlines, and some of the best character development I have seen.

3 - Cowboy Bebop

Cool, sharp, stylish, jazzy, hip; just not enough groovy adjectives to describe this masterpiece.

4 - Fruits Basket

Funny, sensitive, heart wrenching, beautiful. This sweet little anime is a triumph it's a shame it was only 26 episodes long.

5 - Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu

Not much can describe this, watch it for yourself and discover the magic!

1. Nadesico- Hilarious, plain and simple. I have not seen a funnier anime, and yet, it still manages to have a really good story. The end left a bit to be desired, and I've heard the movie isn't too great, but still, it's just awesome. A must-watch, for anyone.

2. Gundam Seed/Mobile Suit Gundam- I put these two together because, well, the first half of Seed is exactly like the first half of MSG, but with new mechs and characters. Besides my love of giant robots, these two had amazing stories, not to mention really great characters.(Well, in Seed at least, I wasn't a a huge fan of MSG's) This isn't really as important, but as a side note, MSG had good music, and Seed holds my vote for best music in any anime.

3. RahXephon/Stellvia of the Universe- I can't decide which I like better. RahXephon's story is just awesome, and it's characters as well. While it's true it does borrow a lot of stuff from Eva, I find it much better. Even though you have to do some thinking in RX, it doesn't hurt your brain like Eva did.
Stellvia, what can I say about Stellvia? Well, the story is alright, nothing amazing. The mech designs were pure ****. Yet, I love it. The characters in Stellvia seem so real, and their interactions really made this show great. Not to mention that awesome opening theme.

That was already 5, but I'll just add a few more. ^^"

4. Scrapped Princess- Just really, really good. Great story and characters.

5. The 08th MS Team- The thing I loved about this series was that it was normal soldiers, not super-ace-pilot kids. The characters were so interesting, it made it great. And then there's the Gouf Custom, which rules over all MS. ^^

And that's my top 5... no, 7 list. Some other favorites:

Witch Hunter Robin
Last Exile
Gasaraki
Full Metal Panic!
Evangelion

And I'm sure there's a few more I'm forgetting.

That was always the intent (which is why my inital speal was so long). I appreciate that people are providing more than one liners (because without justification its like saying your favourite colour is blue...it may be true but no one else cares) and hope it continues as such. If this manages to keep going for long enough im probably going to make a poll of the top few that most frequently appeared in peoples lists...I dont think its going to be quite as successful but the results should be interesting to most.

No particular order....except for #1 ;).

1. Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Gore, Vampires, "pwnage" music, and a beautiful little love story. What more could I want :).

2. Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
Hey, I watch very few anime due to the massive amount of crap that comes out of Japan(or, any other animation mass producer, for that matter.) However, this is the best(and first) soap opera that I've ever been able to withstand through its entirety.

3. Hellsing
The vampire gorefest that rekindled my interest in anime. Sure, seeing gore and guns isn't anything unoriginal, but i was tired of gundam-like shows, and Love hina left and right. That show...must burn.

4. Witch Hunter Robin
I love Witchcraft, although I often hate it in shows. This show, however, is quite the exception. The ideals and style implemented, along with the music, and mainly believeable(I hate Amon) characters. A little episodic, but no big deal. Each has its own power.

5. Violinist of Hamelin
I was about to put Blue Submarine No. 06, but I decided not to. This show at first I was about to throw away due to me thinking it was a hentai(tentacle thing in 1st ep.) Thankfully, I watched the whole thing through, and got interested in the rrest of the series. This show uses a good dosage of classical music, and a good storyline to keep me going. The names being instruments is a nice touch, too. Although, I still hate Flute, but then again, I hate any big eyed girl(or guys sometimes, usually girls because they also have that painfully high voice) in anime.

(6)I thought of putting Chobits for comedy, but I never watched past....ep 06 I believe. Once it tried giving it a story I dropped the show. Note: If you want to flame and/or argue with me, please don't post here, and simply PM me. That way, you can insult me till the cows come home, and mods won't even care :).

Top five series:

1) Cowboy Bebop
2) Escaflowne
3) Gasaraki

Top five movies:

1) Castle in the Sky (I just adored this)
2) Perfect Blue
3) Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (third, but only because its thematic substance was just a corroboration of the series')

Wow, top 5 of all time. Trying to think of the top 5 is hard. I'll pick my favorites that I recommend to my friends who watch anime.
Akira - You just have to see it...
Trigun - My favorite anime overall because it's so watchable
Escaflowne - I liked the series, but not the movie (I saw the series first)
Cowboy Bebop - Well, it seems that everyone who watches anime series seems to watch Cowboy Bebop
Hellsing - I'm a fan of the vampire animes...

1). Neon Genesis Evangelion, I know it's overhyped, too much overhype pretty much made it have it's fans and it's anti-fans. But I love it, the connections with biblical knowledge was really intriguing. I was hooked from the first episode. I watched it when I was a little kid and still I find something different and new every time I watch it. Kaoru is one of my favorite characters of all time, besides Shikamaru. Overall, Eva will continue to be a favorite of otaku.
2). I'm gonna say FLCL, it was just so raw and crazy that you can't stop wanting more. I saw it the first time on 'Adult Swim' on Cartoon Network. One of the only 'good' dubs besides Bebops. To top it off 'The Pillows' are one of the greatest bands I've heard. Just a powerhouse of story, plot (that's debatable ;) ) and great music.
3). Naruto, I know it's a bit high for a series in it's prime, but I think it will continue on being great. The character development could be much better, but the characters are much deeper than they seem. The action is a plus, but I'm not really a fan of action. I really love this series because it has so many twists and turns. You know Naruto will win his battles, and Sakura will continue to like Sasuke, but at the same time things change and appear. There's always something new, and a lot of series don't do that.
4). Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, I'm not ashamed to say that I enjoy shoujo more than shonen styles, but Kimi really takes the cake for my choice in shoujo. The cahracters are frustrating because you get so attached and so involved that they seem every bit as real as your best friend. It's slow, but paced enough to want you to keep watching. I think if you don't shed a tear in this, you have no heart.....
5). .hack//SIGN I know that most people hate it or love it, and I love it. It is slow but the story is really inticing, so I'm willing to sit and watch it. Any show about a game really has to have substance, and in my opinion this really does.

One Piece is a series I have just gotten into so I'm not going to judge it yet, but it seems like it has the full potential to become great.
Favorite OST, FLCL, and End of Evangelion.
Favorite Movie, Samurai x -Trust and Betrayal, End of Evangelion, My Neighbor Totoro.

1. Saint Seiya. (It has everything a master piece needs to have, music, graphics, story, drama, deepnees, character develpment, inspiration and imagination)

2. Berserk. (Pure poetry, simply shoking. It is like watching Brave Heart in japanese version)

3. Future Boy Conan. (Addicting and amusing, all 25 episodes are good)

4. Rose of Versailles. (Best drama ever)

5. Naruto or Hunter x Hunter which is better of these two guys?. (Originalily, lots of jokes, interesting battles, good character development, exelent story)

But this is not just... only 5? what about GTO, Candy Candy, DBZ, Lain, Ijame no ippo, Scrapped Princess, Kimiga Nosumo Eien, Hikaru no go, full metal panic and Ranma 1/2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bakafool2004-01-30, 22:12

Grave of the Fireflies
Evangelion
Ranma 1/2
Astroboy

Azumanga Daioh
Easily my favorite anime. One of the few anime that i can watch from beginning to end over and over again; more suprisingly, one of the few anime i can watch from any episode and still find it entertaining. Its got drama, comedy, and a little bit of seriousness. Its also got Sakaki-San ^^
30!! 31%!! 47%!! TOGETHER 103%!! TEAM BONKLERS WIN!!!

Cowboy Bebop
The Real Folk Blues. nuff said.

Shingetsuten Tsukihime
The music hooked me. IMO, the best opening to any anime.. ever. The plot wasn't bad, either.

FLCL
Amazing artwork.. great story telling.. again, the music was amazing! I loved every facet of this anime, it always surprises me how much story there is in only 6 episodes..

Niea_7
A down-to-earth dramady about a college student.. and her alien roomate. Really quirky.. sometimes a little over the top, but never a dull moment. The music is absolutely delightful ^^

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien...I think if you don't shed a tear in this, you have no heart.....

I disagree with this. I saw KGNE, and I didn't shed one tear. Am I heartless? I doubt it, because I apparently I still feel emotions.

Here's my top 5, in no apparent order:
Lain - I like this anime's ambiguous story. Immersive and moody atmosphere. Also a great anime to get tripped up to when smoking pot. Toke a joint while watching Lain = WHOA DUDE...

Tenshi na Konamaiki - I think this is what high school comedy should be all about. It's got jokes about everything a teenager would care about: gender jokes, fighting jokes, jokes about stereotype students...etc. Thoroughly entertaining.

Scrapped Princess - This is a damn good show. High quality animation, attractive character designs, great voice acting, a hooking, albeit derivative, story is enough to convince me for two thumbs up.

Pitaten - How can I forget this little gem! Very enjoyable (and clean) show that everyone can watch. Mitarai might get on your nerves a bit, but without him, this show wouldn't be the same. It's got my favorite cat in animedom: Nyaa!

To Heart - An oldie but a goody. I never thought I liked this anime. It's extremely tranquil, laid back, serene atmosphere almost became a bore. But there's something about the relationship between Akari and Hiroyuki. I had a lot of trouble describing their relationship. It's like a childhood friend that you know so well and so familiar with that you are able to do anything with her, and she'll still be your friend. Their bond is close and strong that it's almost unbreakable. I wish I had that kind of relationship with a girl. I don't even have that kind of comfort level with my girlfriend, seriously, for I've only know her for two years. To bad I never had a childhood (female) friend.

But remember, I see anime as a form of entertainment. Just like movies, or basketball. Usually if an anime is entertaining, I'll like it, but there's always exceptions, (eg, To Heart). Plus I haven't watched a lot of anime, so my selection was quite limited. And the top 5 is subject to change at any time...

Oh Karma: "Don't question my authority or put me in a box..." heh heh heh.

Everyone has their own opinions this is why this thread exists?

1. Jungle Taitei- You can't get any better
2. Kanon- Best Romance
3.Ojamajo Doremi- The best magical Girl anime
4. Comet-san- The best romance/magical girl LOL
5. I have no idea I love hundereds of anime so this is tied with HXH, Eden's Bowy Galaxy Angel, Unico and so on

KGNE- I have seen better soap operas on TV LOL j/k but I do know of better love stories and dramas that exist that are better.

choowee2004-02-02, 16:21
My Top Five (in no particular order, because narrowing my favorites down to fiver was hard enough):

Cowboy Bebop- I have yet to find someone who has seen this series who doesn't think it as one of the best series ever. Very professional animation, great story line, and Spike. If I had to use a series to define the word "cool" it would be this one.

Trigun- yes, this series takes its time before showing how great it is. You have bear through the first 8 or 9 episodes which appear to be a little childish before you realize how amazing the storyline and characters are. Its an emotional story with a little romance and a lot of philosophy and action. Its beautiful- not to be missed.

Rurouni Kenshin- unlike others, I include the whole series, ova's and movie in this. The Ova's are far better than the series, but since I watched the series first, the superior animation and storyline didn't spoil me when it came to the tv series and movie.
This series has it all, great characters, romance, samurai action, and a wonderful storyline with a dark undertone. Be warned though, the ova's are very violent- though the violence is very meaningful and adds to the storyline.

Fruits Basket- what can I say! I can't count how many time I have watched this series. :) Its a shoujo anime that makes you feel all warm inside- like hot cocoa on a cold winter night. Its chicken soup for the soul.

Samurai Deeper Kyo/ Scrapped Princess- I can't decide which of these should make the list so I am adding both (its become my top six series... ) Both series have great animation, wonderful characters, suspense, action, etc.

It seems like every year, some new show enters my top 5, in 2003 it was Kiminozo, in 2002, Azumanga and Kanon, in either case, here's my top 5 (which is my favorite 5, not which 5 anime I think are the best ever):

1. Hana Yori Dango
2. To Heart
3. Azumanga Daioh
4. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
5. Kanon

Note, ever since seeing Hana Yori Dango, and then To Heart, they've always been my first and second all-time favorites. I don't think it'll ever change. :)

1) Tie between : Evangelion and Rurouni Kenshin. evangelion just rocked. the self fulfillment and seeking your inner being psycological stuff at the end just... blew me outta the water :D we had discussions over cups of coffee and cigarettes over this... very intense hahaha. ok so we have no life... but Kenshin ruled. "unlike others" *ahem* lol (if u read the post few posts above) i saw the movie ovas series and read the manga. The manga made everything come together all so much better. The ovas are a compressed version of the mangas. Find it if you can.
2) Escaflowne was awesome as well. I liked the story and the little disputes over who loves who hahaha reminds me of junior high...
3) Initial D!! WOOT hahaha very intense storyline about a persons pride, something everyone should have no matter what.
4) Slayers was straight up comedy and all i looked for. Back in the day i was into the D&D stuff, dungeons and dragons, and Slayers was seriously like a game of D&D with a drunk DM. hilarious all through the 3 seasons I liked it. Some might not like it but i thoroughly enjoyed it because of the little fireballs and comedy together hahaha :D

In no order:

Berserk - The story is just...ahh, this one is a sticky, it will never leave my top 5 :) Love Gattsu.
Love Hina - Really funny. A fun story and a pretty good romance at the end.
Naruto - Great characters, even better music and sound. Good fights
Onegai Teacher - Love the characters and the music
Onegai Twins - Love the characters even moore :) and almost even better music.

...and with that said i must add that i´ve only seen around 20 animes...so the list will probably change alot.

1) Record of Lodoss War - I loved the OVAs and admire the commitment of the US voice actors who carried on to do the whole TV series too!

2) Inu Yasha - Anything with old Japanese folklore is great fun. I like blue floaty souls.

3) Peace Maker Kurogane - currently my fave (latest from GONZO).

4) Arislan - I still love this series. It's pretty and romantic.

5) Loki Ragnarok - This one's cool with nice artwork. They twist the story a bit!

Hmm, can someone tell me why some of you find LastEXILE as a top 5 anime? I got bored of it when I watched the 1st episode.....Im guessing that you would have also been bored of serial experiments lain, graveyard of the fireflies, and anything else without giant robots immediately duking it out or fireballs flying yes?....honestly comon if you didnt even finish watching the majority of the series how can you make an honest judgement as to its quality? As for last exile specificly it is about as good as evangelion in terms of overall quality and one of the more original anime series out there. Im guessing your a dbz/kenshin/street-fighter junkie yes? just because you have a small tollerance for anime with fewer action scenes dosent mean they aren't some of the best available. Patience is usually rewarded in the end (as last exile had some of the better action scenes I've seen in an anime).

Usually if an anime is entertaining, I'll like it, but there's always exceptions, (eg, To Heart).

I don't understand what that means. You didn't find To Heart entertaining, but you still put it in your Top 5 list and had a good explanation as to why.

And the rest o' y'all please explain why you picked the anime in your top 5 list, otherwise you're breaking forum rules. (It's a good rule too, because how much can you learn from a list with no explanation?)

Also, I like this thread because I still get surprised when an anime which is on the Kempis Curious Bad Anime List shows up in someone's Top 5. A good explanation of why they like it reminds me of how different people are. :) So... don't ask how people could possibly like an anime.

hmm... i got a few things to add to my list on the previous page... :D
Scryed was awesome. i liked the little story about kanami and how she ties into kazuma and all (dont want to spoil).

X-1999 and X the movie were awesome when paired together. You have to watch both the series and the movie to get the whoOole thing. It was IMO one of the best series combo things out there. Very good story line and developement.

Witch Hunter Robin i juss started watching yesterday and is climbing the ranks to become one of my favorites. Im around on episode 10 and whoOoOo i like! ive been pulled into the world of STN-j. :D hopefully the orbo will protect me. :D :D :D

Without any real order:

Ranma ½
The anime that got me into this stuff, will allways be in my heart.

Kanon
This is most likely the anime I would put as my favorite, I'm really found of most everything about this series.

Grave of the Fireflies
The only movie that ever made me cry, just full of emotion, great movie.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
Deep and involving storyline, nicely drawn characters, what more could you ask for?

Saikano? (Tough slot, I want to put in so many)
Well I have not seen more than 4 eps, but they were really great, I can't wait to get ahold of these DVD's.

I'm not sure whether I answered to this thread before. Still it would make an interesting update given the new anime...

Macross Zero
Macross Plus had nice dogfights and focus on the Valkyries but had flabby storytelling and a tacked-on 'epic' ending. Macross Zero has better direction and there's been an undercurrent of war all the way. Surprisingly the best chereographed fight scene to me was the dogfight between the normal planes. Although the Roy Fokker and his Russian rival came close. =P

Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door (the Movie)
Wow, the movie is what the episodes could have been and wasn't due to the time restriction/budget etc. Vincent is a better tragic villian that Vicious. Something about having a katana in a world with handguns didn't appeal to me.

Jinroh
Red Riding Hood carries a bomb. Makes me wish for an OVA or TV series of the Cerebus Panzer Crops. The ending blows you away literally.

Figure 17
A weird mish-mash of genres but I saw it as mainly a growing-up anime with the sci-fi elements as plot devices. The ending is emotional but without much fanfare as befits the series.

Kokoro Toshokan
Episode 11 ... this is the best climax ever. The anti-war message from the reading and it highlights the difference between "offense is the best defence" and "I'll protect my people". Who ever though that such a cutesy anime can have such a deep message.
This anime is the one that cements Chiwa Saitou as the best seiyuu ever for crying scenes. If you don't have a crying scene, you're wasted her talent!

5. Flcl - Funny but weird. and that big red robot was cool
4. Scryed - Very action packed
3. His And Her Circumstances
2. Gto - The thing that onizuka does is crazy. and he gets away with it too.
1. Chobits - Loved it from begging to end. except the special episode at the end . it was kinda dumb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My top 5 Series would consist of:

Rurouni Kenshin - I liked how it was based off of historical facts and how the characters were portrayed.

Naruto - Great story and great creativity on behalf of the creator, Kishimoto.

Princess Tutu - Beautiful. Not what you would expect from a magical girl type of anime series.

Utena - Intriguing story that was quite dark.

Twelve Kingdoms - One of the best plots and had no fillers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

momojigari2004-05-31, 23:25
1. GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka - This one has drama, action, comedy, and romance with a lil' echi all rolled into one unique package.

2. Naruto One of those animes that comes once in a blue moon and it still keeps getting better!!

3. Hellsing Alucard is just one bad-@ss kickin' vampire. You just don't mess with that.

4. Love Hina - One of those animes where u just wanna see a character get whopped by a girl!! hahah..poor keitaro.

5. CHOBITS My very first completed anime series. They say you never forget your firsts in everything..so how can we forget the part where Chii was saying..Pantsu..pantsu. Ahh memories!

In no order (except Mononoke Hime, which is my number 1)

Mononoke Hime (no questions, hands down, a work of art)
Cowboy Bebop + Knockin on Heaven's Door (a classic)
Full Metal Panic- Season 1 + Fumoffu (Funny or amazing beyond belief)
Noir (OST and action kept me drooling)
Scrapped Princess (plot and theme unlike anything I've ever seen b4 in anime)

In close second:

Now and Then, Here and There (Incredibly powerful, but too disturbing)
Kimi Ga Nozumo Eien (It's a bishoujo, what can I say?)
Read or Die the OVA (Haven't watched the series yet, but OVA was terrific. Too short and too many questions to be in top 5)

I may have eclectic tastes, but I stay afloat. I'll watch anything, but I guess I'm partial to the more realistic or artsy actions films (no shounen for me!)

1. Dragon Ball Z

This is number one because it introduced Anime outside of Japan. There should be no reason why this isn't number 1. DBZ as much as you hate it (dunno why I enjoyed it) it's the best anime to break the ice to new fans. I don't know about you, but DBZ didn't get popular because it sucked. If it sucked it wouldn't be as popular as it is.

2. Pokemon

Cmon any idiot can see what it did to the entire world.

3. Doremon

I grew up with this, heck my mom knows more about Doremon then I do... she even collected the Manga, that's gotta mean something.

While I don't dislike the anime (Heck, the latest movie is actually really, really good), I think it was more the games that brought on the phenomenon. Backed up by the show, the merchandising, and a successful card game at a time when such games were a really big thing created a splash the world over.

I need to argue that there needs to be more Ghibli in this thread.

Unless this thread is about anime series.

I would argue that this thread needs less of the trendy, popular this week, unpopular the next, anime, and more of the really, really good anime that is remembered fondly many years afterwards. Ghibli, Matsumoto, and Yokoyama Mitsuteru's works don't seem to get as much respect in the internet community's short term memory span that can't seem to recall anything before Eva, and even that is starting to get a little fuzzy.

I cannot decide, so I will just list the animes that has inspired me for the past twenty years I have been watching anime.

In no particular order (some, i do not know official English title):

[clipped for brevity...]

other animes are very great in their own respective ways. However in a sense how they have affected me in my life for the past twenty years, these animes stand out personally as a vivid memory of my years.

What, no Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro? I remember watching this series with my Mom during my childhood years... I'd kill to get this series on DVD!

And to stay OT:

1. Nausicaa
2. Tetsuwan Atomu
3. Gingatetsudo 999 ("Galaxy Express 999." I just can't get used to that...)
4. Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro
5. Sentou Yousei Yukikaze (I'm an aircraft engineer, what can I say)

- Fromage

I'm still trying to find some story driven anime that is as good or better than haibane renmei, serial experiments: lain, or even last exile....sadly nothing much seems to have poped up (samurai champloo looked interesting for the first ep but it got licenced). I still cant beleive how badly they screwed up the artimage: polymatrix english release, even as I watched it I knew it used to be a good anime (I had actually seen the original japanese ova's) but I couldnt really get past the crappy dubbs to see its hidden charm in the english version...well, just goes to further the lesson that the only good dub is a dead dub (so far anyway).

The reason for not mentioning older animes must be, that most people cut down on their top 5 by the question "What anime would be the best from my present point of view?". To say that you enjoyed those older animes a couple of years ago, so they must be very good is as wrong as to always name the newest animes because you`d like to watch them right now.

In the first case you didn`t know the newer animes back then, so if you just remember how much you liked the old ones in the past you don`t give the new ones a fair chance. In the other case, if you`d have to decide what anime you would like to watch right know, you`d probably chose an anime currently running.

Also, I asume that your taste changed over the time. If I think of myself when I first watched anime, I enjoyed stuff very much back then, that I would rate "OK" at the most by now. Again, to rate the old animes after your "old taste" and use your new preferences on the new ones would give new anime a disadvantage. :heh:

If you think those old ones are still great, then there is no problem naming them here though. :)

enough talking, here`s my personal top 5 (no order, it was hard enough to cut down on 5):

- Witch Hunter Robin (for the plot, the mood and Robins cute hairstyle :innocent: )

- Scrapped Princess (for...I just love it ... :) )

- 3x3 - Eyes (for cool evil demons, even cooler magical powers and a lot of mystery )

- Jin Roh (for me this is the best [and saddest] anime movie ever )

- Azumanga Daioh! (for the fun part in my top 5 :D this anime showed me the true meaning of "rofl" )

Uhh.. So little Ghibli.

Porco Rosso (passionate)
Princess Mononoke (gripping)
Spirited Away (entrancing)
Sky Castle of Laputa (magical)
Totoro (very cute)

I would seriously consider all these my top anime.. but anyways, Azumanga Daioh is a pretty good choice for me too. It wasn't extremely funny in the beginning, but it got progressively more humorous ;) and whacky. And Chiyo-chaaaannn....

Most overrated, poor-written, crappy anime of all time:

1. FLCL (Oh, yes it is truely the greatest anime of all ime. I mean, you must be a genius to make an overrated poorly animated anime the creators made while drunk, right? WRONG. It toook me a long time to realized IT SUCKED.) Note: Not worst anime. Not even on top ten. Anyone who says it holds a deep meaning is talking a bunch of BS. It was made to advertise for a kick-*** band called "The Pillows".
Repeat after me. You will buy the soundtrack.

2. Digimon (What's with the stipid teenaged fans praising a childrens show? What a bunch of doinks.)

3. Naruto (Naruto is just DBZ with ninjas, but duller somehow, despite ninjas kinking ***. Fanboys of this show deserve to realize this fact.)

4. DBZ (The fans: Wow, all they do is scream and recycle fighting animation. This is the greatest thing ever made! Me: No, it takes 5 seconds to think up because it sucks!)

5. DBGT (See DBZ above, but worse. This is one of the top 10 worst anime ever.)

Worst anime period:

1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

If I hear one more person say it's deeper in the Japanese version, I will walk up to their house and beat the crap out of them. It's a 23 minute commercial for the love of freaking God! 0_o It's poorly animated, poorly written, slow-paced that makes DBZ look rushed. This is the worst anime of all time.

2. Wedding Peach

Take all the greatness of Sailor Moon. Then throw it across the room, torch it, then flush it down the toliet, then take the rest and run down the street and shoot it. Momoko's a whiny ***** whose voic makes my ears bleed. The villians make the Amazon Trio look like there in business suits, stupid named enchanted items called the "Saint Something Four". (I kid you not.) The main femle leads are supposed to be best friends?! Yeah, right.

3. Dragonball GT

What the hell is this?! Do my eyes decieve me, or is it a Cash-cow? It's more poorly written, poorly animted that DBZ ever was (Which is a hard feat to pull off.) Turn his crap off. Watch something else.

4. Pilot Candidate

Now I will quote a character: "Hmmmmm........ very intresting......" Yeah. It's intresting on how anyone can not fall asleep while watching this.

One night, I said these words which hold graet and pwerful meaning, "Tim, could you sit up please? I can still see the TV." I haven't been this bored since football season (no offense football fans.)

Note: I will not list the next one to avoid more hate posts.

No top 5 greatest anime because there is no greatest anime of all tme. Everyone has a complaint about an anime, therefore making all anime imperfect in a way.

While I am well aware that everyone has their own opinions I do have issue with a couple of your comments.

Poorly animated? Howso? As an animator myself, I'd have to say that despite any subjective opinions one might have regarding the story, characters, drawing style, etcetera, FLCL displays some very well done animation. There's a number of complicated sequences that are pulled off remarkably, and the show displays a lot more secondary motion, and a higher level of detail in it's animation, than most anime, including big budget OVAs.

2. Digimon (What's with the stipid teenaged fans praising a childrens show? What a bunch of doinks.)

So, the show sucks because it's not aimed at the 20+ crowd? I'm personally not a Digimon fan, but I like a lot of anime that's not neccessarily aimed at an audience of my age. There's bound to be a lot of more valid reasons for you not to like the show. Not liking a show because of it's intended audience is exactly like saying it's stupid for Americans to like anime, because it's aimed at a Japanese audience.

No top 5 greatest anime because there is no greatest anime of all tme. Everyone has a complaint about an anime, therefore making all anime imperfect in a way.

By this reasoning, there is no worst anime of all time either, because every show out there is bound to have a couple fans. If they were so utterly wretched enough not to appeal to anyone, no studio would have made such a show. To stay on topic, you maybe should have posted the list of shows you don't like in the thread dedicated to that, and here maybe listed the 5 anime that you personally like the most.

Now, I honestly do agree with much of your list here, I dislike most of those titles. However, you don't list any reasons. You state that you don't like the show, then you pretty much state that your opinions are self-justifying and that there is no room for disagreement. There's plenty of valid reasons to dislike any of the shows you list, but you don't name any of them. Then you go on to contradict yourself at the end of your post. If you really want people to take your opinions seriously, you really ought to give more thought to the way you present them.

You're an animator? That's a rare thing to see on message boards for me....

Anyway, I hope you realized that some people don't like the kinf of animatio used of this series (ie. Me.) As for the sequences, do you really think they're that well done? Sure the OVA has a fairly good framerate allowing it to flow, but it doesn't help if it confuses te living crapp out of you.

Actually, I meant the series overall. This is the chart. Please note I didn' get to see the Japanese version:

Digimon season one: It was average. Then came.......

Digimon season two: What the hell happened?! It was doing well for a dub until now. I hate Davis because he;'s one of the biggest assholes I've ever seen in anime to date, the new characters are spineless, also characters who were intresting are wussies used to advance the plot for Mr. Asshole to shne along with Sir Agnst-a-Lot (AKA: The Digimon Emperor.)

Season 3: Meh-ish......

Season 4: This is almost as bad as season 2. I don't know why they didn't stop after season 2, but the fanboys wouldn't allow such a thing and made it go on until the end of season 4 when it finally ended for good.

Good point. There's just too much anime in this crazy world.

Now, I honestly do agree with much of your list here, I dislike most of those titles. However, you don't list any reasons. You got it, my good man.

FLCL: First of all, Haruko is a manipulative jerrk who used Naota to get what she wanted. Mamimi existence still confuses me because she adds little to nothing until episode 6. Naota agnsts about nothing. I'll admit I like wierd anikme such as Excel Saga.), but this anime just left me confused on what the hell was going on. On;y really 2 likeable characters:

1. Guy with Big *** Eyebrows (He tried to warn Naota about Haruko because he knew that she was using him.

2. Naota's dad (he was amusing, but still confused abou episode 4.)

Canti was justa DeM (Duex ex Machina) added in for more baffeling questions for me.

Another thing, what's with the stock school mates? Must every anime have one until it's considered an anime? There was only one important stock class mate, but she's only really important in episode 3. It took me 7 times watching that episode until I found out why the crowd broke out into a fight. I don't have time for head-scratchers. I need to watch more anime.

FLCL episode 6 spoiler!
What really got me pissed was that Naota fell for Haruko, after her almost getting him killed, alsousing him for her own greed, and just being a *****.

So it's just an anime about advertising for The Pillows, the reasom why I wanted to watch it. In general, it's just too wierd. It makes Excel Saga seem sane and understandable.

Naruto: It's a been-there-done-that anime. I'm sick of this done in so many anime and Naruto doesn't help.

The characters:

1. Naruto is a whiny annoying concieded main lead (go figure). When I read the manga I thought that Naruto was about 13 to 16, but he's really 10. This shot down my "deep tough guy voice heory" to, instead he was done by a girl (I should've known, after all, it's Shonen Jump.)

2. Susake is probably my most hated anime character up to date. He's not cool, handsome, intresting, or likable. He's every stereotype I hate in anime all in one package. I'm really tired of his "I'm too good to be with these guys" attitude, and if I hear anyone say he gets nicer later on, well I don't care because I get only 2 to 3 chapters a month to read and it started in about November 2002 in the US.

3. Sakura: Yeppie, yet another bitchy character who lusts over the angsty one. She acts like Susake is the greatest thing since sliced bread and sh treats Naruto like crap. Why must I continue my search for a pink-haired girl in anime that doesn't piss me off?

4. Takeshi (or whatever is name is) : Anout time for someone who doesn't suck to come. He is actually cool. Anyone who can tower over Susake is great, and he's also their teacher. He's not annoying, angsty, or whiny.

5. The rest: Don't really remember the others, but who cares?!

DBZ (Comes with long, dragged on battles and fanboys) + Ninjas - Sayians + Vegeta's (DBZ) and Kaiba's (Yu-Gi-Oh!) "I'm the best attitude" with Susake - Stupid deaths and resurrecting from the dead like Jesus 100000 like Krillen from DBZ = Naruto

How many times can they repeat the same thing over and over again until they stop? The World may never know.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is different to dislike the style something is drawn in, than to dislike the drawing itself. In the same way, you may have very valid reasons for disliking a well animated show, that has nothing to do with how well done the animation is.

Perhaps you didn't like the pacing of the scenes, or the composition of the shots. Perhaps things happened too quickly for you, and you missed vital points that left you confused from that point on. Perhaps you didn't like the drawing style, many people confuse that for disliking how well they are drawn or animated.

There are even different styles of animation itself. What moves, how it moves. Do the characters have defined joints or wobbly tube arms that happen to bend in a similar fashion to real arms? How much squash and stretch is present? How realistic or fantastic is the motion portrayed?

I'm not questioning the fact that there is something there that you don't like, just what exactly what that something is.

As for me being an animator, it is unfortunately by skills only at this time. I went to school for animation, graduated (with heaps of praise from my 2D animation instructors, if I may toot my own horn just this once), and immeadiately found a ruined and desolate job market that holds no future for all but the best, and most experienced, and even many of them are left out in the cold. Right now I'm trying to get into illustration, design, and a bit of comics. If nothing else, I'll try and settle into a comfortable video game design position somewhere, after building up a name for myself with freelance work.

I like to make posts before threads get moved, since this one will probably go in the General Anime thread.

But top Anime? You're crazy if you think nothing is better than Naruto.

Go check out things like Scrapped Princess, Monster, Witch Hunter Robin, Hunter x Hunter, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, Infinite Ryvius, Noir, Madlax, Planetes, Konomini, Hellsing, Gungrave, Juuni Kokki, Samurai Champloo, Rah Xephon, Bakuretsu Tenshi, Last Exile, One Piece, Trigun, Shingetsutan Tsukhime... I think I could go on...

I made a list of favorites, Naruto was 2nd to last ;) Although I do technically -like- Naruto, it'll set your level of judgement too low to like anything else, when there is so much better stuff :)

And make sure to read the forum rules please.

Perhaps you didn't like the pacing of the scenes, or the composition of the shots. Perhaps things happened too quickly for you, and you missed vital points that left you confused from that point on. Perhaps you didn't like the drawing style, many people confuse that for disliking how well they are drawn or animated.

Vital points? That's a good one. Most of the important things didn't happen until episode 4. It got less druged up ::or so druged up I knew what was going on: If I can understand Excel Saga the whole way through, I can understand the events of FLCL. For the love of God, they confessed they were taking drugs while making this anime a few years back. (And I'm not surprized.)

Vital points? Yeah, right. This makes the fastest, most confusing anime around look sane and able to keep up with. I've seen more plot and character development in one episode of Pocket Monsters than in the whole series of FLCL. (and thatt's just downrigh insulting. For shame, GAINAX. For shame.) I was being nice giving it 3 stars. I should've just stuck with the 2/5 originally.

FLCL ... this one was stylin. Pretty original ... weird ... and quite cool I thought. The animation wasn't crappy ... it was intended to be that way. Different ... but not crappy. The concept was hip happenin. 6 eps of orgasm.

Berserk... simple and deep at the same time. Seems like a slicem up action anime ... but it makes you fall in love with the characters. It brought out emotions towards the characters ... wheather you hate Griffith or love the band of the Hawk ... And ofcourse there are the simple scenes where you get you check out people get sliced by an 8 foot sword.

Cowboy Bebop ... gotta love the space cowboy. The music ... the characters... the scifi world. A chopped storyline ... that eventually comes together and ties it up. The ending of this show was quite powerful too... that last lines went down as one of the the saddest moments in anime for me.

Hellsing ... totally badass main character. Alucard was so damn cool I didn't care too much about the flaws at the end. Some of the secondary characters like Alexander and Walter were also quite amazingly cool. Some complain that there was no character developement with Alucard ... but in this case I wasn't looking for any. He was perfect and didn't need any change. The only beef I had with Hellsing is that it just sorta ended ... it could've easily gone for another 5 eps. And finally ... I loved the whole concept of nosferatus and newage vampire slayers.

For my last one ... I'll list a movie ... Akira was what got me into anime and it's still the most amazing anime movie I've ever seen. This classic deserves my #1 slot.

1. Full Metal Alchemist - The storyline is very deep but makes perfect sense. The characters are awesome, and there are funny scenes mixed with the seriousness of the show.

2. Prince of Tennis - Seems like not alot of people like this, but I thought it's one of the best sport anime out there along with Slam Dunk. It is also sometimes hilarious.

3. Gungrave - Just...awesome. The female main char is a pain in the *** though.

4. Wolf's Rain - The story's original and action packing, the animation were great too. Studio BONES is great :D.

5. Can't decide between Cowboy Bebeop, Scryed, One Piece and Scrapped Princess.

This'll b good for me. Also next to it, name what genre it is/why you like it.
You don't need a top 10, 5, hell you can write 6. Just name some.

and depending on some answers that's what I'll honestly go download. Your advice/input is going to mean alot so

LEMME KNOW WHAT Y'ALL BEEN WATCHIN!

1. Tenjou Tenge (action) : Good story, nice action scenes, and some humor

2. Samurai 7 (action) : from what i've seen so far the story is pretty good and a good amount of action

3. Samurai Champloo (action) : by the creator of Bebop, not sure about the story yet but the characters are great

4. One Piece (Comedy/action) : well it was just liscenced recently but....it's very funny but has it's serious moments too and good fight scenes

5. Full Metal Panic + Fumoffu (action/comedy) : Good story and plenty of funny moments

6. Condor Hero (action) : great story, beautiful action scenes, very technical martial arts anime

7. Fullmetal Alchemist (action) : another one that got liscenced recently.... same reasons as everyone else has said

8. Hunter x Hunter + OVAs (action) : kinda boring until you get to the exam part but it gets so much better from that point on.

9. Slayers (action/comedy) : It's liscenced but it's really funny

10. Naruto (action) : well you watch it already

11. Tokyo Underground (action/comdey) : nice story, great characters, pretty good action/fighting

.....my list goes on and on since i don't watch anything i don't like for more than 5 episodes.

well, guess I should elaborate some more :

====================
top anime of all time

Mobile Battleship Nadesico - this one is currently IMO the only series that has managed to perfectly merge all kinds of anime elements together into a fantastic experience. There are comedy, depth, hot-blood action, serious philosophy, pure love romance, love triangle harem, parody, etc. etc. You name any element you can think of in an anime, and most likely it can be found in Nadesico. And to mix all these different and sometimes contradicting elements together smoothly is no easy task. Where FMP and GPM failed, Nadesico succeeded.

FLCL - a crazy parody show that actually has a lot of depth and emotional scenes. That's also something very rare. And Haruko RULEZ.

Kino no Tabi - I name it the introductory philosophy lecture anime. The stories are all so thought-provoking and you can keep thinking it over for deeper meaningly again and again and each time you could discover something new from different viewing perspectives. And Kino ROCKS!

Lain - it beats X-Files and Twilight Zone and anything else in the sci-fi mystery conspiracy thriller genre. This is definitely one of the most complex and confusing series. However when you piece everything together, it fits perfectly and makes perfect sense. Watching this show is like solving a very interesting puzzle.

Infinite Ryvius - the miniature human society show. It shows all kinds of darkness and struggles of all forms of human society, and how human nature functions under extreme situations. Very dark and disturbing at times.

RahXephon - a great and beautiful sci-fi romance drama with some heavy religious symbolism, imo this one is better than EVA and Saikano, with all the characters perfectly developed, the story very emotional and complex. It has some of the greatest and saddest scenes in all anime history ever.

====================
top anime of recent time

Gunslinger Girl - great atmosphere, great characters, great music, great ending. A wonderful and somewhat sad, albeit a bit short, series.

Kita He ~ Diamond Dust Drops ~ - great atmosphere, great characters, great music, great ending. The emotions are very real and the stories very heart-warming. Another nice little series that's very warm and touching.

Gungrave - they turned the mediocre plot in the game into a great godfather-like Mafia story! Brandon and Harry, true friendship between real men!

Texhnolyze - the worthy successor to Lain. Very good atmosphere and very engaging story. another grand dark sci-fi drama.

Koi Kaze - where KGNE failed, Koi Kaze succeed (that's my opinion anyway). Great realistic atmosphere and characters, the emotions and character development are simply so fantastically realistic.

Paranoia Agent - from the one who produced Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress, it's a very weird and surreal series. Merging fiction with reality, the story is full of twists and turns and always keeps one guessing.

Kikou Sennyo Rouran - a very unorthodoxical mecha anime with very complex story and character development. I give it some bonus points for the nice chinese mythological setting and great character designs.

My top 5 anime of all time:
5) Eva: Well, I was one of those few people that hated the ending AND the movie. However, the rest of the show is extremely top draw stuff. The show grips you and refuses to let you go. Definetely one of the best shows ever.

4) Fruits Basket: Of all the shojo shows I have watched this one is my favourite. Again, I didn't like the last 2 eps, but the rest of the show is unbelieveably touching and emotional.

3) Inital D S1: I feel that this show is unfairly labeled as a show that no serious anime fan will like. This show has a very good plot, the races were great, the Eurobeats were awesome and Mako and Sayuki owns.

2) Berserk: Awesome stuff. Unlike 99.99% of all action shows out there this one has an awesome plot. And Guts is a true blue badass and not a wannable like all the other pretenders out there.
I will never forget the time where he pwns Griffin's sword in one blow. That was the best anime moment ever

1) Hajime no Ippo: BEST. ANIME. EVER. Nothing can compare to it; the feeling, the excitement, the breath-taking moments...... this show is simply unmatched in brillance.

Honorable mentions:
Gundam Seed: I have never like the Gundam series, but this show is an exception.
Orange Road: Probably the best romantic comedy ever. And the movie is the best and saddest movie ever.
Kodomo: Funniest show ever.
Banner of the stars II: The best part of the series, and a victory in storytelling
Escaflowne: The only anime which I can say has ever attain prefection.

There are probably a lot more shows out there that I didn't mention, but this is a rough idea of the greatest animes ever.

1.Hikaru no go - the best anime I've ever seen in my life! dramatic and emotional and simply amazing cast of characters that grows in every ep!!
I don't think any anime will be better then this one, at least not in the time been, it is that good.

2. kimi ga nozomu eien - very emotional and kinda depressing romance story. the characters were real, I could understand what they where thinking and felt. sometimes I thought I would shed a tear (but no, I didn't), great plot, characters and op song.

3. Trigun - the first ep were kinda annoying 'cause they were nothing but fillers but the later episodes were simply awsome!! great action and plot, sometimes even sad and suprising. great anime! classic.

4. Grave of the fireflies - hard to watch, no violence only missery.
Two children in the middle of a war, they eventually knew their fate yet they tried to survive. nothing helped and the end was predictable yet the most depressing thing in the history of anime in my opinion.

5.rurouni kenshin+movie+the 2ovas. (not including the later ep of the sereis /:) - one of the most popular animes in the world and there is a reason.
great cast of characters, orginal main character, nice romanitc side plot between kenshin and kauro.
and the ovas were amazing!! and 1nd ova was serious and beautiful, the 2nd ova (the end of all kenshin saga) was highly depressing and hard to watch...
this was the only anime I shed a tear in. :(

Alot of times people do genre specefic questions, but I think they miss out on others. so on this, just list your fave complete serie(s) that are fansubbed and not hard to find.

if you could do a - "type of genre" afterwards.

If you got time put them in order.

I'll start off and maybe my suggestions will help(but i doubt it, i've prolly seen what others have already heard of/seen but hey).

1. Naruto- you all know

2. Boys Be - teen dhrama

2.. Tenjou Tenge - fighting action/romance-ecchi

4.. Aishetruze Baby - dhrama

5. Midori no Hibi - comedy-romance/action

pretty soon when I finish KGNE it'll b in the op 5. I dunno, EVERYtime i watched the show I was tired from work so I can't enjoy it! it sucks! But I have to squeeze in the time i have away from sleep & work for anime.

Not even in the slightest bit. I'm not even sure where it was animated, but I would have to guess Canada, or perchaps the U.S.?

Personal Favorites:
1- Tie between Yugioh and Hunter x Hunter (MOST ppl do not give yugioh a chance, it is JUST like hunter x hunter in teh fact that it takes FOREVER to get good, but when it gets good it is REALLLYYYYYY good, they currently arn't even on the episodes on TV, if you have seen the BUTCHARDED yugioh, that are REALLLLLLLYYYYYYY good. It gets good around ep 80 (which has aired) but it doesn't get KICKASS til like 150 or so...)
2- Outlaw Star

Probably REAL ones if a national poll happened:
1- Spirited Away or Akira or Princess Mononoke
2- Spirited Away or Akira or Princess Mononoke
3- Spirited Away or Akira or Princess Mononoke
4- Evangelion
5- Cowboy Bebop (AKA Outlaw Star MINUS actual plot...)

1.Hikaru no go - the best anime I've ever seen in my life! dramatic and emotional and simply amazing cast of characters that grows in every ep!!
I don't think any anime will be better then this one, at least not in the time been, it is that good.

My kind of guy, this one. :D

Ok lemme see... first off, no movies. You cant compare them with series.

1. Hikaru no Go
As quoted above, this is also the best anime I've ever seen. I've never seen such character development all across the cast from the main players Hikaru, Sai and Akira to even the smallest ones, passing by for just a few episodes. The music... oh the music... A must see.

2. Hajime no Ippo
This one is almoooost as good as Hikaru. Except for the OVAs that couldn't fit everything from the manga. Character development exists but not nearly as much as in Hikaru. HnI makes up for it with humor and sheer excitement. Those boxing matches are killers, which of course is very important. Takamura also has to be one of the best characters ever. :D

3. Full Metal Alchemist
Though this one hasn't finished yet, if they keep up like this it will earn it's way in on this list. Every episode leaves you wanting more. There are tons of characters all likable and interesting, and unlike many action-oriented animes it doesn't cater to smaller children. (Naruto?)

Now it's getting harder...

4. Great Teacher Onizuka
It seems ridiculous at first, but Onizuka as a person somehow makes sense, and it's both fun and interesting seeing him slowly win over his students.

5. PlanetES
A very realistic depiction of the future space age, and I must have been the only one that enjoyed listening to Tanabe's rants. :)

A few I considered...
Cowboy Bebop: Very stylish and with interesting characters, but in the end I have something against stand alone episodes. I need a story to keep growing and developing to keep me interested in the long run.
Last Exile: A good story with superb production values doesn't justify greatness... Arguably, it could beat out PlanetES though but I don't feel like going back changing it.
Naruto: Had a potential that was higher than the skies. Too bad the anime was aimed at even younger kids than the manga. Less blood, more Konohamaru... taking only the best parts of the anime it could easily get up to position 3 on my list.
Aishiteru ze Baby: This could very well have been on my list if I hadn't only seen 3 eps so far. It'll probably be there soon enough.
Gungrave: Really good actually. In the end it becomes a bit linear and predictable (like a videogame, omg! ) but on a whole a very good anime.

1) Slam Dunk (Manga version): Very few anime that managed to inspire me with every volume. Added with great humor and explicit details in art to make number one in my chart.

2)Naruto : The explanation is almost unneccessary. Undoubtably an anime fan's dream come true.

3) Love hina : I like this anime for personal reason, as many fans will attest too. Very humane anime/manga that I'm sure most peole can relate to.

4) Trigun : I can't and refuse to forget this classic anime. Powerfully touchin' anime with actions and humors to boot.

5) Spirit Within : Very plesant to watch. Very clean and almost ethereal. Don't expect much. Just watch.

KomikaruNe2004-07-22, 21:06
This includes manga too cuz i read A LOT, so i read manga a lot more than i watch anime. And there's 7 cuz i couldn't pick.

Blade of the Immortal
Azumanga Daioh
Fruits Basket
FLCL
Princess Mononoke
Mars
Escaflowne

So actually, there are 5 animes in there, but i havent seen the Azumanga anime yet, but the books made me laugh so hard and read them in class and couldnt help but laugh out loud and people in my classes thought i was crazy. Yeah.... I dressed up as San from Princess Mononoke for Connecticon last week cuz I'm a geek and i go to cons and I love making costumes.... Is there a Mars anime?

First off, I'm biased towards recent shows becoz they're fresh in my memories, and I only list TV series here.

***** Top 5 (in no particular order) *****

Serial Experiments Lain - I love the suspense and mysterious atmosphere. I would never forget the humming of the electric lines. The story is complex and the plot is deep that makes me keep thinking after watching (which is a good sign of a great show). The story is not particularly sad but it does make me felt lonely and empty. I also have a feeling that the original Matrix took some of the ideas from Lain.

RahXephon - This is no doubt much better than EVA. I watched RahXephon three times and still found plenty of rewatch value. This cannot be said for EVA, which I have a hard time going through the first time since it is so brutally boring. RahXephon had much better character developments, you can't help but fall for the characters, many of them are likable. Plus it has one of the best endings in my memories which put EVA to shame. Rather than a EVA ripoff, I see RahXephon as a cross between EVA and Saikano with a relieving atmosphere. Indeed, I love RahXephon becoz it has a great love story.

Wolf's Rain - one of the most original story from the awesome Studio Bones. I love sad story, this one has all the melodrama plus beautiful graphic and music to fit the mythical world of Wolf's rain. It's simply a piece of art! Eps 27-29 in my opinion the best episodes in any anime, though the ending is a little bit rush, it's still good.

Fullmetal Alchemist - not a kid show though have a kid show appearance. Deep and thought provoking, have comedy to balance the sad moments pretty well.

Scrapped Princess - oh, how many Bones' series have I listed? This one is from my top 3 of 2003, together with Wolf's rain and Last Exile (which just miss my top 5). I can't find anything similar to compare with Scrapped Princess, the closest thing may be the Matrix movie. Scrapped Princess found a way to combine a Medival fantasy world with sci-fi futuristic (aka Matrix-like) settings, it has an interesting story plus some of the funniest moments in anime (Btw, The funniest anime has to be FMP Fumoffu).

***** Just miss my top 5 (in no particular order) *****

Saishuu Heiki Kanojo - the best thing from Gonzo, a great love story with a strong anti-war tone, it has the best sad stories in anime. (Grave of the fireflies is the saddest movie though).

Last Exile - Second best thing from Gonzo, a fantasy story which any aviation fans will love.

Turn A Gundam - the best Gundam series directed by Tomino. Yes, it's even better than Zeta Gundam, which I also like but not as much as Turn A. Many Gundam fans simply don't give Turn A any chances because of its "unique" mecha design, but Turn A has one of the strongest story plus the most developed and likable characters in any Gundam shows, also give credits to the wonderful music by the great Yoko Kanno.

Full Metal Panic (1& Fumoffu) - the third best thing from Gonzo (only made the first season), the first and second season combines to be the best duo of action and comedy in anime. The first season has plenty of wonderful actions though the plot is sometimes a bit weak and illogical, but the second season madeup for that with the best comedy I've seen in any anime.

Peacemaker Kurogane - the fourth best thing from Gonzo (wow, turn out I like Gonzo alot too). The early part of the story is slow but nonetheless fill with comedy, but then the pace and atmosphere suddenly changed in the last quarter of the seires. The last 6 or 7 episodes alone could be in my top 5 all time. I love to see blood and these last episodes satisfy my blood lust along with awesome samurai battles (btw, I don't like the unrealistic, stylish fights in Kenshin)

Nadia, Secrets of the blue water -- Normally, I hate Gainax shows with a passion (well, their style are just not my cup of tea). but this one turns out to be the only Gainex shows that I love. Yes, even Disney love it too and made a replica of it.

Chobits -- a very warm love story, Chi is so adorable! Indeed, I became a fan of Rie Tanaka because of Chi.

The rest aren't in order.

3. Last Exile. Great animation, great music, great characters.
4. GTO. Very funny, has some emotional moment which is a + ibut not too much which is good, story is good I guess i just enjoy this series.
5. Full Metal Panic? Fummofu/Cromartie. I like them equally. Both are very funny... funny enough that that's all that is needed.
6. Hellsing. I don't know why but I just like Hellsing a lot series a lot...
7. Slam Dunk. Very funny, has to do with basketball, there are great character even if you hate them I think it fits well. I like the outcomes of some events... But sometimes I'm just annoyed with it...

I've seen lots of good anime, but three of them stand out from the rest.
They are Kiminozo, Gunslinger Girl and Shingetsutan Tsukihime, in no particular order.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien - drama/romance - Don't know why, but this show was something very special for me. Good plot and interesting characters.

Gunslinger Girl - drama/action - Animation quality and attention to detail is very high. Very interesting characters.

Shingetsutan Tsukihime - drama/romance/sci-fi (?) - Mysterious, serious and overall very well done. Also quite touching.

Watch Fruits Basket!! They are soooo cool! 26 episodes, and after you watch all of them, you'll watch them until you die. I love  Fruits Basket and think the guys are teh hotness gods  .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yellow Dwarf2004-08-08, 00:05
1. Rurouni Kenshin 1st OVA. Dark and gory, but at the same time a very warm and touching tale about love and hate, peace and violence.

2. FLCL. A slightly disjointed narrative sprinkled with a lot of strange comedic antics from a cast of goofy characters, but I still consider it one of the best coming-of-age tale told in anime.

3. Fruits Basket. In comparison to the lackluster manga, the anime is much more subtle, much more touching, and much more coherent as a consistant narrative with a key focus on human relations and the portrayal of kindness and honesty in people.

4. Uchuu no Stellvia. For a kiddy-ish-looking anime, this anime sure packs a punch. Tons of spaceship action, comedy, a touch of romance and the guts to to explore themes that are not kiddy-ish. This anime is fun without fluff. It's also one of the most optimistic anime I've seen in a while.

5. Voice of a Distant Star & She and Her Cat. This anime (or two) doesn't compare too well to the four listed above, but I pushed it up a couple notches for being evocative, concise, and very personal (and knocked NGEvangelion from its spot here). I like She and Her Cat just a tiny bit more, for its brisk pace, sensuousness and a very distinctly Asian sensibility. But of course, with the combined length of a mere 1 hour or so, these two do seem to lack depth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My top 5 are:

Hellsing
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

To list some that haven't been mentioned above, and are out there subbed:

Votoms - I can't believe no one mentioned this! This, while it wasn't THE first real robot(that distinction belongs to Gundam), was one of the early ones that helped shape the genre. Lots of explosions and good action, and through it all, the mystery of the PS. Not to mention Chirico's whole character was rather... unique.

The various Yuusha series. GGG is included in this, though it was mentioned above, but these are all great. Big mechs, beautiful transformatiosn, and lots of hot-blooded action. Not all are subbed, but Dagwon and Might Gaine are being done, with more coming eventually.

Irresponsable Captain Tylor. - Is it luck or is he just that damn good? Good for laughs, and lots of twists. My old roommate wasn't too much into anime, but Tylor had him hooked.

As far as some less recent ones that people have mentioned before, I'll back up Nadesico and Slayers as classics... they're even finally translating the novels for a US release for Slayers... book 1 is on my bookshelf right now. And of course Macross.

not to pick on Mashimaro, but if y'all'd please give reasons why you like the anime, that would be nice. "list threads" are againts forums rules. Because they are boring. :)

Besides which, it's hard to that believe someone really likes an anime if he or she doesn't explain why. :( Also, I've discovered a couple of great animes because of what people have said here...

actually i can list more than 5 animes in my top 5 list

1- hunter x hunter, shaman king, full metal alchemist, golden boy, berserk
2- cowboy bebop, haibane renmei, last exile, full metal panic fumoffu, vampire hunter d:bloodlust
3- full metal panic, gto, inuyasha, naruto, tenjou tenge
4- ghost in the shell, one piece, macross plus, macross zero
5- kimagure orange road, mononoke hime, evangelion, gunparade march, wolf's rain, magic knight rayearth

most of them are fascinating and it is of the reason.
besides, i usualy like animes according to my watching duration. if one anime could be seen as at least 7-8 part in one period it is good for me.
for the first number animes, i watched these anime in 2 or there times. at least 20-21 parts in one period :twitch: because i really like them.
and than the others' number of part decreased. for the 5th line animes, the parts per period were actualla 3-4.

In no special order -just the best I can remember even now.

Green Green
Absolute humour and raunchy romance to boot. Also, there just might be a *real* love-triangle in the end -one can only hope. :D

Outlaw Star
If you can ignore the horrible ending, several anomalies in the plot (like the protagonist getting shot in one screen then being like nothing in the next), and space-ships with arms so they could shoot with gigantic pistols -instead of their "normal" laser-vulcans- you can find a really entertaining anime.

Love Hina
Again, if the end is ignored this is another great anime -if you are into harem-stuff. :p

Tenchi Muyo!
Much like Love Hina, but a bit better thanks to the "demon." Some anomalies in this one too and their relationships do not seem to go anywhere, but good nevertheless.

Buttopi CPU
It's just perverted in a right way. :heh:

3. Full Metal Alchemist, not just a crowd pleaser.
4. Slayers Next (3 words, Xellos, Xellos, Xellos :) )
5. Hmm, not sure.

NinjaServ2004-10-28, 11:06
This would be hard to list....but Here is my list at this current moment and time (altho this list would be subject to change in the future depending on future shows I see):

1. Hunter x Hunter
2. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (UNCUT) Don't hate ;) it's really a great show when you get past the first crappy saga.....I'm one that usually watches and doesn't stop til the end unless the show is EXTREMELY bad or has STRONG homosexual content (that isn't comedy...).
3. Initial D
4. Detective Connan (Case Closed) - Also saw this recently, but I have been REALLY enjoying this series on Adult Swim.
5. Sorcerer Hunters - Saw this one recently, but it was a show I REALLY enjoyed watching.

My Top 5 are listed by "Thrill" factor. Ones that "excited" me more (stop thinking dirty you...-_-) while watching it I consider to be the best.

Shows That were considered that didn't make it to the list:

Adventures of Mini-Goddess

Top 5 Animations (not based on art skills):

1. Family Guy
2. Hunter x Hunter

4. Maison Ikkoku (not finished)

 You haven't finished it yet? The ending was AWESOME, I love that anime!

Y'all still need to explain why you like the anime you list, otherwise this thread might close for breaking the rules. Lists without explanation are boring.

I have seen some anime over the years, but it was only 2 years ago that I got this thing called broadband internet. ^^'

Fortunately, I liked about 99% of all the anime I ever watched over these 18 years (in Portugal there wasn't much anime available, though...) :(

The list... well, it's hard for me to list them... I like all of them! :D I didn't see that much anime, unfortunately. :p Although I intend to changed that - I'll download all the anime I wished to see and more!! XD :heh:

The anime I liked the most; here we go:

1) Touch
It just marked me. :D It started me on anime when I was only 9 years old, although I first watched the spanish version episodes, and only till ep. 22. This was in 1991 and 1993. Only this year, 2004, I had access to the fansubs of Touch (finally!!!). Basically, I only had to wait 11 years (talk about patience and hope!) :p
And it was my father who suggested me and my older brother to record this series! :twitch: :) He noticed the fine design and art of it. :)
This is why this anime is so special to me. :)

I've watched till ep 49, and I hope central anime won't stop fansubbing it.

Its fabulous soundtrack still inspires me today :),the storytelling and directing is excellent (definitely the "touch" of Mitsuru Adachi :)) and the voice cast is superb!
And it even made me like baseball! If only baseball was that exciting in real life... :p

2) everything else
OK, some examples... from the oldest to the newest anime I saw (with the year I saw them):

on TV)

Future Boy Conan (I didn't know the real concept of anime yet)
Anime Sanjuushi (I didn't know the real concept of anime yet)
(Touch) -> the series that changed it all :D
Hiatari Ryoukou
Hikari no Densetsu (some spanish dub eps.)
Idol Densetsu Eriko (some spanish dub eps.) [awesome songs] :D:D:D
Lupin III
Magical Emi (some spanish dub eps.)
Miracle Giants Dome-kun
Captain Tsubasa
Ranma 1/2 (some spanish dub eps.)
Sailormoon
Evangelion
Tenchi Muyo
Rurouni Kenshin
Saint Seiya
Escaflowne
Cowboy Bebop
Generator Gawl
Boogiepop Phantom
Excel Saga
FLCL Furikuri
Cardcaptor Sakura
Marmalade Boy
Urusei Yatsura

fansubs)

Angelic Layer
Kare Kano
Love Hina
Ai Yori Aoshi
Azumanga Daioh
DNAngel
Ultra Maniac
Kodomo no Omocha
Initial D
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien

And then there's the rest. I won't mention them because they're just too many... :p
But the difference between group 1) and 2) is very very small. It was the "long awaiting" and the circunstances that makes it more special. :)
