I just answered a similar question on this subject a few minutes ago and I will cut and paste the answer that I gave. I hope it helps...
I work for a Biotech company and I test on animals for a living. With that said, there are pros and cons on the subject. When I was in college I wrote my thesis on animal testing and how cruel it is. Then I got this job and it changed my mind somewhat. The majority of companies treat their animals better than most people treat their pets. The animals are checked on multiple times a day. They are given enrichment so that they feel like they are in their natural environments. They have the best veterinary care and when an animal is sick, even a little mouse, everyone goes running to help. The staff is well educated and trained. And the majority of people that work in this type of environment are all animal lovers. Sometimes it is very sad and depressing to see sick and diseased animals. Occassionally we get letters sent to the office from sick people who were cured or whose symptoms were relieved because of our medicines and it makes you feel good. However, I am talking about Biotech and pharmaceutical companies. There are other companies out there that do toxicity tests, and not on drugs, but on household items such as cleaning agents, makeup, etc... A lot of these tests can be done nowadays without animals, but still are and that is what is sad. I couldn't live with myself personally if I tested mascara on a rabbit. But I can live with myself trying to cure breat cancer with a mouse. Call me a hypocrit if you want. In my line of work scientists have to go through a rigorous process of getting experiments approved and even then only a minimal amount of animals are used, and we treat them better than we treat our own pets. And not all of these animals die in these facilities. Many of them are adopted by people who work there, by farms, zoos. Many of the animals live long, happy lives. It's a touchy subject. I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

The pros are obvious. We can find out a lot without hurting a human, ie. a being with recourse.
The con's are equally as obvious, and ominous. Animals have no voice in our courts. They have no defense at all, except from people who understand and speak in their defense. So much brutality, torture, and pain has been endured by lab animals in the name of science. In Hitlers regime it was the Jews who were "sub-human" and literally used as guinea pigs in all sorts of inhumane experiments. It was obviously and horrendously wrong. Torture for any reason should be outlawed, regardless of the species. An inability to see this is certainly one of the great shortcomings of our "civilization".

There are not any pros listed the following are the cons: Animals structures are diverse than ours so we can't specificly prepare the outcomes on people. because animals pass loopy Animals are torn with the exception of households at start Animals are overwhelmed if no longer co-operating it isn't medical, it really is disgusting Animals sense concern and soreness we are no longer to dominate them Animal testing gained't lead us everywhere, it is going to in effortless words reason awful soreness, and vicious experiments. they could't allow you to comprehend the way a lot it hurts we've one of those huge quantity of state-of-the-artwork NON-animal testing strategies, yet some peoples stupidity blocks them from seeing the reality. for further suggestion, pass on Google and search for "PeTA Animal testing Video" it grant you with all the suggestion you want I absolutely were writing letters and speeches about animal testing for a lengthy time period now. save the animals

Pros: include the possibility of finding cures to deadly diseases and improving the lives of people world wide.
Cons: Harmful to the animals being tested as many animals suffer and die horribly. There is this illusion that we have the right to harm animals in such a way. Many animal tests are done for things like cosmetics and not for disease cures, which I find very vain.

Type it in to google and you'll get some pretty graphic information on how these animals are tortured including having chemicals rubbed in they're eyes, being forced to smoke cigerettes, and being injected with diseases. Also you cant be sure that animals will have the same reaction as humans. On the plus side its the cheapest way to test for allergic reactions etc.

When you need an apendicitis operation, wouldn't you be glad if the surgeon had had a chance to practice the operation on something before you?
Using cadavers is a step, but doctors need to practice on living things.
Nutrition tests on animals led us to know what vitamins we needed.
Some animals are bred for research, only.

cons outway the pros
pros : ;you can see what effects testing has on animals before on humans
Cons :
- you are hurting innocent creatures
- msot animals (monkeys, dogs, rats) that are tested on are significantly enough different from humans that reactions that occur on them are not necessarily the same as what will happen to humans
- they can lead to false assumptions in the sceintific community.. remember the whole saccarine thign? for years peopel thoguth saccarien caused cancer becuase of what happened in lab rates, later it was proved they diddn't
-shampoo and make up can kill animals
- there are no benefits to the scientif community
