Oh yes. My horse is 3 and I adopted her and she had been called Beauty since the day she was weaned from her mother and I renamed her Razzington (Razzy). She responds perfectly. Give it a shot. At the beginning I called her Beauty so she would get used to me. Now she basically responds to anything I tell her because she knows my voice!

Horses, or animals in general, learn their name by hearing it over and over again. If you adopt this horse, everytime you see it or are around it, call it by the name you want. After a while it will learn it, because it know that you always call it that, Trust me, and try it, it'll work. Now if this horse was like 15 or 20, I'd stick with the old name. But hes pretty young, so give it a try!
Good Luck with this horse. Hope it works out for you!

Its really up to you. I was raised real old fashioned though by people who told me that renaming a horse is bad luck. I don't know if its true or not- but in my 53 years I have never renamed a horse to find out.

Of course you can rename it. Horses, unlike dogs, really don't know their names, to tell you the truth. At our barn, they rename their horses most of the time when they get them.

You might want to ask the people if it is easy to get used to a new name or not. My dog had a name for a year but then we changed it and he learned it in time

i would go for it if the horse ignores you even after a few months it won't weork but you should try a name that starts with the same letter or has the same amount of syllables

You can, horses do learn their names over time, mine learned theirs quickly because I can't whistle so I just stand by the fence screaming their names when I want their attention (my grey always walks over to me when I scream his name) "dinner" or "breakfast" at the top of my lungs has them all charging in.

Yep! Horses don't always respond to their names anyways, but I ride a horse Satin(Arab, 22yrs) and I call her Midge(t) and she figured it out pretty easily.
(She's a dressage horse, with her owner in college. I'm out 2-5days a week)
