I know what a server is meant to be for but is there anything different internally? Are they just glorified PC computers with more space? Thanks.

They're slightly better than glorified computers with more space. Servers are designed with network throughput and efficiency in mind. so their hardware configuration is designed to be easily expandable, redundancy in several areas (power/processors). They aren't usually configured with fancy video or audio cards. They may include multiple network cards. Almost always configured with some sort of RAID for faster/secure hard drive performance.

That being said, any computer can usually function as a server - but perhaps not optimally.

Conversly, a server in many cases would make a horrible gaming pc.

the two are computers. A server can produce different utility working on it than what you generally see working on a private pc gadget. while the own pc gadget fires up a software to run, it is going to request from the Server. The Server could be working Apache and would not even have something like a private pc. even nonetheless, the Server determines who sent the request, what style of utility generated the request and, as a on a daily basis occasion, generate a custom internet web site to deliver returned to the customer pc. Servers are placed international, with the swifter ones paying a top classification month-to-month fee for a T! telephone connection line (the Server is often on line). Routing centers are clustered at places like universities searching for receipts and forwarding requests and deliver records in little packets.

I think what you want to know is the a SERVER PC any different..
and the answer is no ........
its the software programming sets it apart...
A server PC is programmed to do whatever is asked of it..
by other PCs in a network...
eg your own PC needs a WEB SERVER.. so you can access the Internet...
most big companies will have a server PC within their network to make admin possible on a local level..
.... the SERVER PC is the MAIN FRAME in other words its the MASTER PC in the local network of the hotel or business etc.. which is doing the bulk of the donkey work because it has been sophisticatedly programmed to do so...
hope this helps ...

Servers typically run a different version of the operating system.

As far as the physical computer itself:
Desktop PC's can be run as servers. However, servers are built with better hardware. Hardware that is meant to be on all the time, better cooling fans, etc. Desktop PC's are built to be turned off on a regular basis.

Servers usually have more memory and more processing power. The main difference is that the server will actually have server software on it like 'Windows 2003 server' or something like that.

A server is what you use to get online, not an actual computer last I heard?

Might have a different OS too depending on what exactly you're serving.

Hardware is gonna be different too. More RAM is needed, more HDD space is needed.
