You can easily install VMWare.
It create a Virtual Machine in one your hard drives.
Then you can install any distibution of Linux on it without affecting he windows.

If you have enough space in any of your system drive (C: or D:) then you can start installing Linux there, but it's rather unsafe, bcoz then two different operating systems - Windows and Linux will share the same disk space for storing data. Safest process is, first go for partition in hard-drive, then while installing Linux leave twice the storage capacity of RAM for "swap space".

Install linux to empty harddrive partition. You can manage your harddrive partition before installing linux from Windows Control Panel->administrative tool->Computer management->Disk management.

You can load it on Virtual PC for XP (free from microsoft). Otherwise, I'd partition the drive and keep the installations separate. Separate physical drives is the best bet.
