are you using the external power supply for the drive, or hoping the USB port will be able to power it? You should use the drive's power supply. You can power small usb devices from the port, but the drive probably wants too much.

i assume you mean open it in 'my computer'.
actually opening a hard drive is a real bad idea, dont do it.
is the drive showing in 'my computer'?
what OS are you using?
if it is an older PC it might not recognise a drive of that size.
as already said, make sure your power supply is properly attached, it wont work just off the usb lead.
is your usb enabled in the bios?
plenty of reasons for it not to work but a lot more info needed really.

if the light does not work then it could be just the bulb. check if the actual hard drive is "buzzing" and you can access it. If theres no life from it then check all the cables to the power properly, if nothing still then call the supplier.

There's always a way to open everything. If there are no visible screws, check if there's screws hidden under the nonskid feet. If not, you may need to get a puddy knife and pri it open. It is really unlikely that the light burnt out, as those lights are typically LEDs, and never burn out.
