You are going to want to go to Dells support website and download the audio drivers for your model.

Then install them.

There is no real good answer, except trial and error. I would first try right clicking on My Computer and clicking on Properties. Then click on the Hardware Tab, followed by clicking on Device Manager.
There will be a list of devices, look for one with a "!" by it. If there is one under "Sound, video, and game Controllers", then it is likely that you need to reinstall your sound card driver. This can be found at Dell's Website or off of the CD that came with the Laptop.
If that doesn't work, or there is no "!"'s in the Device manager, then you will need someone to take a look at it.
Another possibility could be that your sound card is disabled in your BIOS, but unless you turned it off, it is doubtful. The only other reason could be because the sound card is defective, in that case, tell your sound goodbye.

Would help to know what happened to the laptop to make the sound go out.

Anyhow, you might need to reinstall the audio's device driver to get the sound working, go on dell's website and look for your product and see if they have the driver for download.

Depending on what happened though you might have a hardware problem and then there's not much you can do there.
