A STRONG "YES" and most beings don't give them the credit they are due. While it may appear that their needs are basic, in the wild, they receive much more from nature then their captive counterparts could ever hope to be provided with. So don't think because they can't interact with you as some animals do, that they feel any less or are less significant, because they are not. They have a valuable place in the animal kingdom and the more kindness, compassion and quality care you give them, the happier and healthier they will be and you will see the difference.

They may be able to recognize you, I know that since I left for college and left my turtles with my parents, they go NUTS when my mom enters the room, since she is the one that feeds them.

As far as feeling that they are loved, reptiles have basic emotions, such as fear, contentment etc... But they do not have the capacity to bond or love. However, they can still be very happy and content if you love them enough to care for them well, and I think knowing that they are happy and healthy is just as good:)

Each of my turtles recognize me as the one who feeds and cares for them. I don't know if they know me by my scent or by how I look, but they definitely act differently when someone else comes to see them. They also can be very loving sometimes and I think they care about me as their provider. Mine all have distinct personalities as well.

This will appear crazy, I had two turtles in my life but I can assure that each of them had a quite different "personality". If given as much attention as any other pet, they show signs of recognizing people, of their preferences as to food, of emotions, etc. etc.

I think almost any animal is capable of that. Turtles have good sense of smell, I am sure that they recognize your scent and have become very familiar with it. I think if animals could talk, we would be amazed at the depth of their emotional experience.

No. Turtles are smart, but not affectionate. They DO learn to associate you with food, however.
