Angelfish can be more aggressive than many people realise.

They should be combined in tropical community tanks containing other medium to large sized fish of similar temperament.

Angelfish can be kept singly or in a small group in the tank. A group of Angelfish also do well in a planted species tank.
Fast-moving, nippy fish such as Tiger Barbs and Head and Taillight Tetra or Black Widow Tetras are not recomended as tankmates unless they are kept in a largish school, as they will try and nip the trailling fins.

Angelfish are not to be trusted with small fish and shouldn't be kept with them, especially Neon Tetras (the natural prey of Angelfish). Angelfish can rightly be blamed for many a mysterious Neon Tetra disappearance.

Many of the smaller tordeo-shaped Tetras, Rasboras and Danios will be at risk with Angelfish.

Better choices are the larger, more oval-shaped Tetras (such as Bleeding Heart or Diamond Tetras) and larger Cyprinids.

New Fish Introduction Tips:
Extreme dominate or territorial aggression occurs most often when an Angelfish has been established for some in an aquarium and a new tank mate is introduced. As you already have an established fish and want to then add another, one trick is to remove the fish present in the aquarium, re-arrange the decor if possible, then place the fish back into the tank along with the new Angelfish or any other New Fish you choose.

9 out of 10 times I have experienced, this works !!

All the Best.

I had a similar problem with a large male who had been alone in a tank with just a pleccy. The only thing he never attacked! What I was told worked for me so you might like to try! Take him out of the tank into a small holding tank with the same water conditions! Rearrange the rocks and plants and then put the NEW fish in! Then add Mr Territorial! Turn out the lights as you should for at least an hour and then feed a light meal! You could add Angels or similar sized compatible cichlids You could add a bristlenose or dwarf pleccy. They'd ignore each other! It's all down to the size of tank. If its less than 4ft I would leave him as a loner with perhaps one of the smaller plec species unless you can guarantee another angel is a female! There would not be room for two pairs! We were lucky to get a known female and a shoal of mixed danios which succeeded in stopping his aggression. I think it works by confusing him. He's got to re-establish his territory!

Typically, other angelfish. Angelfish like to school, are you putting the same size fish into the tank with it? You could try a couple small severums if he's really aggressive.

Hey usually they recommend no Cichlids, Brackish fish or Pond fish with Angels. Well the aggression could be over the size of the tank or the lack of a mate (well that's often a Big reason in my country - India). I would go with Killifish, Mollies, Rasboras, Swordtails or even Tetras - the last are extremely fast at evading attacks in particular. I have also known Cory cats to have done well. All the best and happy fishin.. hope the advice helps.

If you have a fish that's aggressive & kills other fish, the best thing to do is get something bigger than it. Your fish is trying to take over the tank, get something bigger & it won't feel as cocky. It should calm down then. xxx
