I think they take the individual contest more serious. Why? Because it's more personal. It's them as a individual against the other guy as an individual. The 3-point shooters really wants to prove that they are the best shooter out there, the slam dunkers really wants to prove that they have the best dunks, & the skills guys really wants to prove that they have the best skills...... As for the all-star game, the players aren't really giving it they all. Thats why you'll see Shaq doing things out of character, like taking the ball down court & shooting from out his range. In a REAL game Shaq wouldn't ever hurt his team doing stunts like that. The players also doesn't play serious defense. That's why you'll see guys doing incredible dunks & plays you'll never see in a real. Anyways, the players take more pride in the individual competitions, & the game itself is a game designed to thrill the fans(Harlem Globetrotters like). What do you think?

Hey Russell S,
the only reason Arenas started to shoot one handed is because he realized that he already lost, moron! You didn't see Arenas doing that at the beggining of his shooting, he done that on his last couple balls to shoot. It's was already IMPOSSIBLE for him to win, IDIOT!...and skills challenge, Wade's finishing time this year was better then his last years time. The 1st round they take their time to make sure that they don't mess up, & the 2nd round they put everything on the line and go full force. That's why Wade had a better time finishing the 2nd round then he did the 1st round.......Some of you guys are getting the question mixed up. It's the all-star game OR the 3 other contest as an WHOLE(all-star game v.s. the 3 contest).

......and another thing Russell S. You say the dunk contest is taking serious because the winner wins 35 G's. Well what in the heck do you think the skills challenge & 3 point winners get? What a MORON, skills & 3 point winners gets 35 G's too.

Hey Beast8981,
you sound almost as stupid as Russell S.. I'm not the one who was saying that 35 G's is the reason why they took it so serious(that was Russell). All I was doing was using his words against him. Anyways, those guys take the other challenges serious as well. It's not about money, it's about pride. You don't think Wade, Kobe, & Lebron knows that the world are constantly comparing the 3. Because if you don't think that they know that, then you're a fool. Those guys knows that they are being compared, and anytime you're being compared as athletes you want to prove that you're the best. So if they're in a competition against 1 another, they're seriously going to try to win. Just like MJ & Wilkins was at each other throat in the dunk contest years ago(see..they already had money & they both were stars, it's not about the money it's about winning). Chris Paul is more broke then the other 3 & he had the WORST time. If it was about money then why didn't he CP win?

Alpha Wolf,
quit hating on Wade! We went threw this before. The people who competes are the ones who cares. If they didn't care then thay wouldn't compete. You just mad that Kobe got dusted by Wade. Those guys are constantly getting compared so you know that they were trying to win! Why do you think Kobe got in that contest for? To try to upstage Wade. Kobe haven't been in any of them competitons for years, but as soon as Wade became skills champ, then all of a sudden Kobe wants to compete. He was trying to beat Wade but he LOST! POINT BLANK!.....and like you said, who cares about all-star mvp? Because it's a worthless award. Now finals mvp is something to be proud of (which Wade already has, unlike Kobe).

Hey Alpha Puppy,
learn how to read. The question is, all-star game OR the other 3 competitions as a whole, IDIOT! Wade is 100 times better then Kobe. He proved it all-star weekend. Wade beat Kobe in a ONE ON ONE competition that they both TRIED to win, Kobe got a mvp award in a TEAM game that isn't taken SERIUOSLY, see the difference? In the competition they were TRYING to win & in the game the players were was JUST PUTTING ON A SHOW. What would you be more proud to accomplish? Anyone would be more proud of winning something when everyone was trying their best. They tried their best in the skills challenge, and everyone knows that the all-star game is a joke. So Wade & all his fans got the better of Kobe & all his losers, LOSER!

I think they take all of them seriously, just not as serious as a regular season. The allstar weekend is all about entertainment and fun. Since the game does not matter then they show off and do crazy things like Shaq throwing up threes and others doing crazy dunks. The dunk contest is usually full of up and coming stars so they take that seriously because 1) they get a nice check ($35,000 this year for the winner) and 2) it is a way to get their names out there. If the 3point shooters where truely trying Gilber Arenas wouldn't have shot 1 handed 3s at the end even if he did already lose and the guys in the skill challenge didn't even look like they tried until the finals so can't say they took that to serious either.

Definitely not the All-Star Game... See Shaq as you mentioned... and you'll never see a self alley-oop off the backboard in a real game.
They take the individual contests more seriously for the most part.
Of the three individual contests, I think that they take the slam dunk contest the most seriously. I only say this because the 3-point shootout and skills contests are made up of established stars or at least players that are already very good at what they do (shooting)... see the lineup this year, Bryant, Wade, LeBron, and CP3 replacing Nash in the skills... They could have gone faster but do they really care? They have the cash, and no one has ever tried really hard so they don't look bad doing just good. The 3-point is similar... although Gilbert Arenas did seem to care.
However, in the dunk contest, usually (with some exceptions, there is usually about 1 big name to draw fans, ie Dwight Howard this year) it is players who are rising, and they want to win the contest to garner the attention of the fans... for instance, who cared about nate robinson until he won last year? no one. now, at least people know who he is and people actually thought it was a loss when he was suspended because of the brawl.
On that note...
While you are right in your comment to Russell that they get a 35G check for winning all the contests, the dunk contestants are players who are in their first contract (unless they signed an extension) and could use the extra $$. the 3-point and skills contestants are usually established players who have enough $$ that they do not need the 35G. Oh, and Wade was 0.3 seconds behind last year's finishing time.

Honestly it would be between the 3 point contest and the Slam Dunk contest. 3 point because it is first of all there is much less chance of someone getting injured and because you are there to prove you are the best shooter of the year.
The 3 point contest because they are a bunch of nobodies not all but most of them want to prove something so they really try hard. If you saw this All Star weekend there shouldnt even be a prize money for the skills challenge because they didnt even try.
But overall the 3 point shootout because it will put them on a list with the all time greats

The whole Allstar weekend is a individual showcase, even the game.Nobody's going out there and playing fundamentaly sound basketball..there going to showcase "there own"skills..that's why you have Shaq dribbling through his legs and alley oop's every 5 sec.
Now out of all the event's, It's really between the dunk contest and threepoint shootout (most people don't really care about the skills challenge,as much as the rest of the events) I'm going to say the Dunk contest is most important,(slightly beating out the threepoint shootout.)Think about it, we still remember Kenny "SKY" Walker because of the dunk contest. What year did Jordan win MVP in the allstar game's?who cares? But we remember 88 dunk off.Dee Brown blinded,Baby Jordan,Kobe in warm up's,Air canada,J-Rich and many more
ps: Don't forget the shooter's...Hodge's( i wouldn't go to the Whitehouse either Graig)Bird's finger raised...Jordan (proving he is mortal, what did he score like a 7?)...Peja!...to now J..J...Jason.

I thought the question refered to the allstar game/weekend.... not the NBA finals. You asked"What do the nba players take more serious, the All-Star Game or the slam dunk, 3 point, or skills competition? "...I answered the slam dunk championship...Did Kobe want to beat Wade in the skills competition?..of course he did...that's what makes Kobe..Kobe! .Did Kobe and Wade go at it in the "skills competition"? of course they did.Did Wade beat Kobe?Yes he did. What happend next?Kobe went out and got the MVP of the game!(wich is better then throwing a ball through a hulahoop)...
"....and like you said, who cares about all-star mvp? Because it's a worthless award"-You...I never said it was worthless..I said the dunk championship was better,,,and the 3 point champ., and the game MVP is way better then the skills competition. If you don't know now you do........................
....are we finished?...cause if you want Kobe vs D-wade , your in the wrong forum......it's too easy....
_______________________________________________
I told you.... the dunk contest is better!...Kobe's got that....Most Valuable( Of great importance) player..... Kobe got that to..You know what's not valuable?( Of great importance)....the skills competion..none of them were "really" trying ..it's the first competition of the day ..so you know I'm right! At least in the allstar game they play hard in the 4th quarter.....Kobe scoring from everywhere and the crowd getting fired up!....did you see?....did you see it?....that swagger...that energy....that love for the game...aint nobody got it like Kobe..hate him or love him..that you can't argue.Love for the game...that's what makes a player great!...Kobe's got more love for it then anybody.
" IDIOT! Wade is 100 times better then Kobe."-you..........once again stop calling people "IDIOT"....Wade is a great basketball player not an IDIOT.
There's a bet giong on how many times you use the word eye d 10 tango...don't let me down...........(eye d 10 tango...means "IDIOT"...I thought I might have to break it down for ya!)...........

I agree. Pro sports now is all about 1 on 1 competition. They want the total focus in the spotlight. For instance you can remember who won the dunk contest than the stats in the all-star game.

I think your right, but I think they kind of have to. If you go out in the slam dunk contest and not give it any thought or effort, you would get absolutely blasted by just about everyone and look like an overall idiot.

Whichever they are the best at, is the one that they will take seriously, depending on the player and the player's talents.
