Weeeell. If one of those asteroids socks into the earth, the earth will be rid of mankind and a whole bunch of other mammals and living creatures. Whatever is left will have to survive for a while till the dust settles and then get on with life again.
On the other hand, insects have their wars and their famines too, so maybe the planet is doomed to carry strife upon its every tectonic plate, ocean and sea. Then again, what do we expect from a planet that would be dead if its very core were not a constant war of elements. From the center to the furthest air molecule our world is friction. Yet that friction gives us life and energy.
Life is strife?
P.S. This doesn't quite answer the question you posed, does it? Yet in a way, I think it does. Humans are just another creature that fights for turf. We have simply let it evolve into what we call civilization. But we're no better than the big bully pummelling the little kid in the school yard. West, East, Wealth, Poverty. It is up to the individual to choose how it lets lines affect its life. If enough individuals choose wisely, there might be a chance... There are over 6,000,000,000 humans. Start choosing.

The fundamental problem is that the rich Western nations are reliant on the poorer nations for their economy to survive, whether it be tapping off natural resources or buying in on cheap labour.
The solution is to find a balance where the richer nations can sustain themselves without the poorer nations' help, and vice versa, yet trade and economic communications still exist. It's never quite that easy though.

It's possible but not probable. There's too much greed in the world. We all make the mistake of thinking that there is only so much stuff to go around, so somebody has to do without. But that's not the case. We can all be wealthier if we work together. We just all need to care more about our planet and our neighbors.

As long as there are no checks and balances to limit the extent to which individuals, corporations, and nations can hoard resources even at the extreme expense of others, then famine and war are inevitable consequences.

there will have to be a better world...it isn't a choice for any one group of people. From economics, to the environment, to politics the need is for balance...it is unavoidable.
