I love this questions!
Everything I read on hamsters the life expectancy is 2 to 3 years. Most of my hamsters that I have bred and raised lived to be over 5 years. At least the ones I raised till they died...My precious boy was almost 6 when he had to be put to sleep cuz of health problems but even though he was in a lot of pain he faught till he died. I just couldn't let him suffer more than he was already.

Average age is 2-3 years but it varies on the type of hamster

most hamsters live to be 2 - 3. mine was 2yrs and 5 months.
a man in england had a hamster that lived for 6 years!!!

I read 2 years. Wish that same book would have said don't let males share a cage. Someone gave us 2 males. Said they were brothers so they'd get along fine. Wrong. Now we have one. So sad.
And don't worry about the spelling. 4th or 5th grade, Mrs. Goldstein, spelling book said "hamster" she said we should have looked it up in the dictionary and spelled it right "hampster". She gave me a complex on that - I never got spelling words wrong until then. To this day I'll spell it anyway I please, thank you very much! (45 with a chip on my shoulder?)

I had a Female Teddy Bear Hamster named Athena for 5 years. Of course I got her from a pet store where she was tamed already and didn't know how old she was then, so she could have been older. Would have been nice to know...

I guess the life span depends on how well you take care of it...
My neighbor had one hampster who lived 3 years and another who lived a few days...

They're supposed to live for up to 5 years (average 2-3 years), but as many hamster owners know, they do not reach even half that age dut to disease. =(. The poor little guys...I had a hamster that lived 5 days with me before he died. *sniffle sniffle* I miss the poor little guy...
