Knitting a sweater and want to decrease size to taper to body. How does one calculate the nimber of stitches to reduce, and where to allocate the reduction?

Try using a knitting calculator. see links below.
I use a percentage calculation, I want to decrease by x percent.
remember on the decrease to choose the right decrease for the direction you want the stitches to slant.

you would calculate how many stitches you make in 1 "....then figure out based on how much you want to decrease the pattern.
