Mitosis is the process by which a single cell replicates, divides, and forms new cells. It is essential to life because cells are constantly dying and they need to be replaced to support life for the organism. Just go to wikipidia and search for mitosis instead of coming here to find people to do your homework for you; it's not that hard.

In mitosis, a single cell divides to form two more cells, as they grow they then divide into four cells, etc. This is different than meiosis, a single cell divides twice, resulting in four cells that do not grow and divide again. Mitosis occurs after meiosis with a sperm cell fertilizing an egg cell. This single cell then divides by mitosis.
