I used to run IE and experienced much of the same trouble you did. Even after purchasing expensive anti-virus and anti-spyware software, I still got pop-ups and all sorts of stuff that slowed my computer down and made internet use a pain in the a**. I was 5 seconds away from taking a baseball bat to my computer and buying a Mac.
But...
I found out that most spyware and or viruses are targeted at systems running Internet Explorer. If you haven't already done so, download Mozilla's Firefox browser. It is a free to use, open source internet browser that is very similar to IE in most respects.
Once I installed Firefox, it was like a veil had been lifted. I had no more popups, no more spyware, no more problems of any kind. It took me about 5 minutes to get used to using it, but it came with some great tools like bookmark synchronization (combining your laptop bookmark (favorites) files with your desktop's.)
I would suggest you first try Firefox. If that doesn't work, you may need to get an old priest and a young priest.

AVG anti virus/anti spyware remover.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/...
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

You can try Ad-Aware or Spybot...they are both free but from what you have described you may have more stuff than a free scanner can handle. Go get a program called Prevx1. You can download a 60-day trial that is fully fuctional. It is great...it will get rid of every peice of spyware that you have. You might also want to make sure you have a good virus scanner and keep it up to date...AVG is free and very good.

For spyware protection you can get it free from adaware... so do a google search for adaware se personal and download it. get avg from free.grisoft.com and go to www.download.com and there is a search bar at the top of the screen type in multi-virus 2007 and download that too... then start scanning. Trust me... I am a computer tech. I deal with this sorta stuff all day long. good luck... ps... did i mention this is all free???? lol...

Go out and buy a disk ... I use P-cillin because that's what my husband uses at work, and he's a 'computer professional' ... and make sure that when you 'run it' you let it 'continue to run' in the background so that it 'scans' for spyware and viruses all the time, and 'warns you' if you try to open a website that downloads spyware onto your computer.

This is the best best BEST way to get rid of your virus. Download CounterSpy and the free trial of Norton Anti-Virus. Use both to scan your system. i think its the best way since both programs are from major companies that know what they are doing!!!!! Also Never never NEVER download programs such as WinAntiVirus, Spyheal, Spy Falcon, Pest Capture etc. as they are rogue programs which means they DO NOT work and will keep diplaying fake alerts until you decide to buy the full version which won't work and now they have your credit card info!!!!!!!
Also the popups are all FAKE saying stuff like trojan attack and stuff, they want you to download their rogue programs. IGNORE THEM!!! If you look at the blue bar above them you will see that it displays an INTERNET symbol. but your REAL security center is on your C drive!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Backdoor Trojan is in the Smitfraud family of Trojans. Smitfrauds cannot be removed by regular AV and AS programs. It must be removed by specialized programs. These two sites have free program and procedures to remove this Smitfraud.
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
The WinAntiSpyware is caused by a Vundo Trojan. This requires a special program to remove it.
The procedure should fix Vundo-based Winfixer(WinAntiSpyware, WinAntiVirus, Blackworm, Amaena)problems.
Please download Atribune's VundoFix.exe (version 4.2.71 [as of 21 April '06], or later), from
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4
and save it to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK Note: If VundoFix does not reopen after a minute (or two), then you should skip-over the "Run as a task" step, and continue-on to the following steps to SCAN and REMOVE.
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
If VundoFix fixed your problem, then help prevent a re-infection:
There is much speculation that a "hole" in some older versions of SUN's Java is being exploited by WinFixer.
So you should upgrade to the latest version, 1.5.0_11 from:
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
When you have this version downloaded, go into the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
You may have additional Trojan infections. ewido is the best general Trojan removal program.
Download and Update Ewido (now called the AVG Antispyware). Do not run:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
TEMPORARILY SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
3. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders", and clear(uncheck) the "Hide protected operating system files" check box.
IMPORTANT: Files are hidden by Windows for a very good reason. It is not wise to experiment with these files. Unfortunately, to successfully remove modern spyware we must turn this protection off temporarily. Please turn the protection back on when you have finished cleaning your system.
EMPTY INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER CACHE:
1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button. Select the Delete all offline content check box in the confirmation dialogue box that appears, click OK. Click OK again.
RESTART IN SAFE MODE:
To do this you need to hold down or repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer is booting (when the computer is displaying a black screen with white text). When the boot menu appears, use your keyboard arrows to select "Safe Mode."
Safe Mode can look quite ugly. The color may look bad, and all of your desktop icons will be very large. This is normal.
START THE SCAN WITH YOUR PROGRAM(S).
When the scan and removal are completed REBOOT COMPUTER. This will restart you in normal mode.
RESET HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
The RESTORE POINTS may be infected with the Malware and cannot be used. Delete the old one(s) and make a new one.
CLEAR OLD RESTORE POINT(S). HERE'S HOW:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click on the System Restore tab.
3. Select the Turn Off System Restore check box, click Apply, then restart your computer.
4. Return to the System Restore Tab and turn System Restore back on.
TO SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Point to Programs, then navigate to Accessories, then System Tools, then click System Restore.
3. Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.
4. In the Restore point description box, type a name for your restore point, and then click Next.
5. Click OK.
NOTE: If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and are unable to access the Internet after removing Malware, there is a command that may fix the problem. It works by resetting the winsock catalogue. Click on Start, then Run and type CMD in the box. Click OK. Type "netsh winsock reset" (no quotes)into the DOS window that appears.
The above procedure can be used with Antivirus and other Antispyware programs.
