Well, if you have the cd, just whack it in and hit any key when it says boot from cd (ensure it is set to boot from cd in the bios via F10 (usually) when it boots). Then choose to install windows, delete the old partition so you're starting again.
The problem is, SP2 is vital for the security of XP and i wouldn;t advise using XP without it. If your pc is running like a dog with it, then there is something up with your pc or you need more memory, certainly no less than 512mb.
The reason microsoft release SPs is not to slow things down, but improve things (haha) yes, you can;t believe that the whole time, but it's generally better than leaving it susceptible to vulnerabilities.
On the other hand - use LINUX!

Personally i would reformat and reinstall Windows although a defrag would probably help. Service packs are there for a reason and you have to look at everything you have downloaded and what you are running. How much memory do you have? Is there a possibility of a virus? Do you have adware or spyware installed? All these things can contibute to poor performance

If you truly have saved everything you need off of the hard drive, just put the XP Home CD into the drive and restart - it should walk you through formatting and reinstalling Windows back to its original state. It will, however, remove all of the programs and documents/music/downloads on the drive, so make sure you've backed up EVERYTHING and have discs to reinstall other programs.

that's a problem - without SP2 you're a bit vulnerable. Can you strip out everything except SP2, or does that not help at all?
there's also msconfig - start->run->type msconfig->ok
go to "startup" and see if you can identify things you can switch off. If you don't know what it is, google it. If you still don't know, leave it on
