ok, im into sony and there consoles, but im very open minded, so bare with me...
right now, the xbox 360 is obviously the better games console, mainly because it has a wider range of titles out, such as gears of war and lost planet...which are great games, but that is because the console has been on the shelves for over a year now....
the ps3 has been released in november, and is being relesaed here (in the uk) in march...so game producers havent realy had a chance to work on games for the playstation 3...the graphics on some of the new games are pretty good and can be compared to the xbox 360 gams that they have released now...so if you give the game prodcuers a bit of time to figure out how to make games for the ps3, they will overcome the xbox360.
However, some games that are on the xbox are pretty cool, and HALO 3 is coming out soon, and thats probably going to be the best video game to date..
also, the playstation 3 blue ray disc has larger amount of space, allowing more game storage to be put on it and longer game play time...
so there u go, right now, the xbox 360 is the better console as it has a wide range of games out as the console has been on the shelves for over a year....but give it time, when the game producers figure out how to make excellent games for the ps3, it will surpass the xbox 360 as the ps3's processor is very very very powerful....
hope this helps

I'll try and be as fair to both sides as I possibly can.
As of right now, if you want a new system, X-Box 360 would be a better platform to get. It has a large selection of games and the premium system is cheaper than Sony's. Their online service is also better (but you do have to pay extra for it).
Sony still has to get the ball rolling with their system. The PS3 is a bit more powerful, but doesn't have any great exclusive games to really make the price worth it. Maybe in a year when companies are comfortable with developing games for the system they'll start to rule the market again.
If you're willing to wait, then look to see if a system will be getting any exclusive games you're interested in.
To say outright one is better than the other is JUST personal preference, based on the company, the games they have, etc.

We have tested and accepted reviews on both systems As far as graphics are concerned they are both similar since the xbox has recently released a 1080 update allowing the 360 to display full 1080 on 1080 capable t.vs. prior to this update the 360 couldn't go 1080.
Playstation 3 does offer more out off the box than Xbox 360, and the PS3 network is free to owners of the PS3.
PS3 premium-60 gig
Blue Ray
True 1080 HiDef
PSP game share
The internal 60 gig hardrive- capable of storing Ps2 memorycard game saves.
Ability to hook up external hard drives-
Key board and mouse abilities
Surf anywhere on the net like any computer (PS3 Has it's own web browser)
Play games- Resistance Fall of Man- Motostorm(out in march)
Play all the Ps2 games if you have ps2
Xbox 360 Premium-
20 gig hard drive
Xbox live has fees but is great fun
Has Great game titles
1080 update available- but not blue Ray
No web Browser for internet browsing
Xbox 360 currently has more games available and Halo 3 is soon to be released.
Both offer WiFI connection to the internet Xbox needs pruchase of extra hardware to do so.

Best answer is to hold for now. Both parties have not fullfilled their potential yet. Wii outsold them both this month.
If you are not a 24/7 hardcore game player, hold on buying. Give it another 6 months- 1year. Too early to decide. Plus in that time frame, there is a possibility of price reduction.
In the meantime, hold on to your PS2 because great games still coming out : like God of War. Play the Greatest Hits.
In my opinion, none of those two is worth buying as of now. Again thats my opinion. By next christmas season, we will have a much clearer picture.

hduffer16, the PS3 does not have the better graphics and thats not what makes a console better
Its all down to opinion but if you had to choose then it would be the 360 due to it having more great games, its sold way more and its more popular
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: What is it with people rating my answer as bad? I'm saying the truth here. hduffer says the PS3 has better graphics when it doesn't (just because he has one) and he gets his answer rated good whereas I say its the 360 with better graphics and I get rated bad, whats with that?
The 360 does have the better graphics, try comparing some games
