It is a recruiting skills showcase where all the top prospects from College Football go to display their physical skills and football skills. There are such events as the 40 yard dash, weight lifting, and various agility drills. It is a chance for the college recruits to show what they couldn't on film in terms of athletic ability to NFL scouts. If a player wants to increase his value going into the draft, for instance, he will train for the combine and go through the drills to the best of his ability so that he can increase his draft value.

The 40 yard dash is often the most talked about drill due to the fact that NFL scouts are looking for fast players in most skill positions (e.g. cornerback, running back, wide receiver, etc). If a player has a great 40 time, he can increase his value enormously and hence make more $ when he finally signs a contract.

NFL prospects gather in the RCA dome in Indy and perform various drills (running, lifting, jumping, etc.) to show off their athleticism and talent for NFL coaches and scounts, hoping to improve their chance of getting drafted (/move up on the draft board). Often players are seen as worth more or less after the combine, while players who were already rated VERY high do no bother participating (which is why I find it odd Calvin Johnson is participating as far as I know when guys like Reggie Bush, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart didn't participate in the combine).

Basically when college football players who are eligible for the NFL draft are evaluated by NFL scouts. Generally the tests include bench press, 40 yard sprint, vertical jump, and a psychological test.

NFL prospects do a bunch of physical tests and interviews so the NFL teams can get a feel of what the player is capable of and what the player is like(work ethic, character)

The most useless event that is associated w/ football. It actually determines the draft order. Players from colleges are invited there to be dissected by scouts to see how fast they can run, jump, lift weights, etc.
