Any animal can learn a new call name. It may take a while but cats tend to come whenever they want not by what they are called. ;)

It is your cat now. You can do whatever you want to. That said, the older the cat is, the harder it will be for it to learn its new name. With a lot of repetition, though, it'll likely figure it out. Cats are not dumb. Use it a lot whenever you do anything nice for the cat, and don't use it too much if you are mad at the cat. In the end, the name doesn't mean anything to the cat. All that matters to the cat is getting fed and its head scratched. It really only means something to YOU. So name it whatever makes you happy.
That's my advice. Congrats on the new cat!

I think renaming an adopted cat is ok as long as you make sure to teach the animal its new name.

Its really up to you. A lot of people think it's better to stick with the name they came with, but actually dogs and cats can get use to a new name very easily. Ever had a dog or cat that you gave a nickname too? And they answered to it as well as their name?
Most pets will adapt to a new name. So if you want to change it, I think you should ahead and go for it.
Congrats on your new cat. And thanks for adopting instead of buying! =)

If you think the name fit's him well I would keep it. Some cats are very attached to there names, it's the one thing they haven't lost throughout there lives. Others despise there names, but most likely he was re named at the shelter and that's truly where his new life began, where he learned that not all people are bad. I would keep it if you think he likes it, and it suits him well.

They won't know the difference. I give my cat a new nickname like every month and she doesn't seem to mind. I had gotten cats and dogs and had renamed them all. They named my cat Florance...yeah right!...I named her Coco (yes no a) for obvious reasons, she looked like coco(a). I think naming your pets give you power over them, and thats why God let Adam and Eve name all of the animals. =]] Hope this all helped! Post the names you're thinking of or the one you choose. =D

I got my cat from the shelter as well and although I did like the name they gave her I decided to rename her with a name that meant something to me.
If you prefer your name than the one your kitty came with, then change it. After all, it is just a name, you are not changing his personality :)

If it's a puppy or kitten, under one year say, then I think a new name would be ok. But beyond that, it's most likely learned its name and will be confused when you start calling it something else. It's really entirely up to you though.

With a cat it doesn't really matter, it's not like they really come when they're called anyway. I would go ahead and give him a new name if you want to.
