I guess assertive behavior can help you learn and grow. Well being assertive could help you learn because if you don't understand something you would be outspoken enough to ask to have it explained or whatever...
working through small family problems: Listen to each other and talk to each other in a respective way. no shouting or fighting...
You could use a mediator or counselor...

I am not sure if these answers are "textbook" but I think they are the true answers. Hope this helps.

*Assertive behavior means a person respects their own intelligence and reduces information and deception until the answer if found. Such behavior speeds up learning and growing.

*Tell the whole family they are on "time-out" with you and should sit there with each other while you are gone so the problem is not a cluster of conversation. Another way is to find the moderator, usually the father I guess, and let each person speak their mind in turn. The father will then make his decree as to what will be.
