When you chain sanity to the wall it does the only sane thing it can do: make the best of it. Sanity will believe that being chained to the wall is the most wonderfull experience in the world. Sanity will do this by doing whatever it takes, creating whatever it needs to -to make it so. Sanity knows it is its own perception, its own creation. Sanity knows that while he bears the same name as a thousand other self created sanities, he is unique. The sanity chained to the right of to him insists that he is the wall and that the chain is god while the sanity to the left is convinced (and can be quite convincing) that he is the chain and the wall is god.

Depends on the strength of your sanity; either it withers away and dies, or if it was strong it fights back and eventually breaks down the wall. There may be a third option, a kind of limbo land for those whose sanity is strong but not effective - these are the ones we see standing shouting at the wall.

If you chain it to a wall it won't be able to move around with you. You literally will be without sanity - or insane!
But say, a sane person (not me!) comes along and unleashes it from the wall- Well the person would then become extra sane.

this question appeared in one of Ian Rankins 'Rebus' novels. I think it was called The Black Book.
