Is there anything I can do or say anything to my boss? (short term medical leave?) I mean, I just cant see leaving a 2 week old while I go to work, plus most day cares will not take a baby until they're 6 weeks old. I just cannot believe they only give 2 weeks.

Research the maternity program carefully at work. Per the Family Leave Act, you are entitled to take up to a full 12 weeks, the company just doesn't have to pay you for them. They also cannot take away your position, as this would be considered discrimination. Talk to your Human Resources representative and make sure they are the correct person to be answering this question. Find out if short term disability will pay for the 6 or 8 weeks that is normally given for maternity leave. Congrats on the pregnancy and hope it all works out for the best.

Look into this further. Perhaps you didn't get the whole picture. I had to use all my vacation time first... Then I got 4 weeks MEDICAL leave... Then I had two weeks PARENTAL (aka maternity) leave. There is no requiren't to PAY you during a maternity leave, but you do have rights under the FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act.

YOU will not be ready to go back to work after two weeks. Especially if you end up having a c-section. I just went through it and it took about a month for me to feel like a fraction of myself.

Find a copy of the FMLA and read it and understand it. Then find your company policy on short term medical leave. Something has got to missing in the information you were given so far.

When you say that your boss only gives 2 weeks of pregnancy leave, do you mean that he only pays you for being off for two weeks or thinks you should return to work after only two weeks? Birth is a traumatic event for your body. Two weeks is not enough time for you to fully recover.

From past experience, I was put on disability leave by my doctor a week or so before my baby was born until six weeks after her birth. This allowed me to get disability payments during this time and protected my job until I was able to return. Look into your state's particular disability program to find out if you will be able to qualify. Then you can approach your boss well educated on your rights.

Do you mean you get 2 weeks PAID maternity leave, or just plain 2 weeks maternity leave?

I ask because I received no paid maternity leave. I had to claim short-term disability for 6 weeks and use up all my vacation and sick time. (But I'm not bitter!)

FMLA allows you up to 12 weeks leave, though unpaid. If you claim FMLA, and your workplace has more than 15 employees, then it is illegal for them to tell you that you have to return after 2 weeks.

In any case, talk to your boss and see if you can work out a part-time schedule at the very least.

Good luck and congrats!

Do you mean paid leave? The family and medical leave act states that if youve been with that company for at least a year they have to give you time off unpaid. Don't immediately start throwing laws and things in his face but try to appeal to his compassionate side. Show him that you understand what kind of position it puts him in but show him what it does to you. Youre right most daycares won't allow a baby that young. That seems very unsafe for you and your baby. Your body needs time to heal. I'm sure it only seems like you're "just pushing out a baby" but there's muscles and things involved in that we don't even comprehend. Even if he won't budge you could get a nanny.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure that by law you're supposed to get six weeks for a vaginal delivery, more for a C-section due to health issues. Bring up the Family and Medical Leave Act with your boss. It's your right.

I think this is Federally covered under the FMLA (Family and Medical leave Act) of 1980? They may only PAY you for 2 weeks, but legally they are required to allow you 6 weeks gone- Not paid, just gone.

Check to see if your company provides short term medical leave. I used to work for Williams-Sonoma and they had that policy. You have to be enrolled into the policy and most places only allow enrollment during certain times of the year. Speak with your HR department to find what options are available for you.

My understanding is that your employeer must give you a six-week maternity leave.

You may wish to contact the Labor Department in your state and ask what the rules and guidelines are.

CONGRATULATIONS on the upcoming birth of your first child.

Have a lovely rest of the day. Bright Blessings.
