It's a Fujitsu General air conditioner, a bit old. The fan does work properly and the thermostat control knob too, upto the point marked '4'. If i try to move it up for cooler air, the MCB trips. There's apparently no cooling at all. Please advise me what to do.

Sounds like the compressor is either locked up or burned out.
When you hit that certain area on the stat (4), the compressor tries to start and trips the breaker. The thermostat probably isn't closing until the 4 spot. The fan is always running and the compressor is trying to come on and tripping the breaker.
Either that or a wire came off the compressor and is grounding out.

the water pump impellers may well be spinning on the shaft inflicting no water or low water pass. you additionally could have an air bubble interior the cooling device inflicting the vehicle to overheat. i could open the radiator cap and run the engine to work out if the coolant is flowing good. even have you ever put in the thermostat interior the ideal direction. i'm no longer asserting you don't be attentive to what you're doing, this is basically that that's put in backwards.

The power trips to avoid overheating the outlet which could either burn out the breaker or cause a fire. It trips as a safety precaution. Sounds to me like the outlet you've plugged it into can't handle the power needed by the air conditioner.

What size kw is your a/c?

If it a big one it should be on it's own circuit. It sounds like when the thermostat cuts in it shorting out.
Get someone in to fix it. It will be worth it.

If its a small a/c like 1 1/2kw. They can share the power circuit with other things in your home. You may have to many things blugged in and turned on at the same time causing an overload

I would say that a/c is over heating and causing the power to trip out. You should try cleaning the cooling rad and the filter. I hope this will solve your problem, its the cheap way out, keep cool.
